GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team closed out the season with a dominant 7-0 victory over long-time rival CSU Pueblo on Saturday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The Mavericks, who finished their season with a 12-15 team record, swept every set and gave up just ten total games in singles and five in doubles as the careers of three Maverick seniors ended on a high note with all three going 2-0 throughout the day.
Delia Maier, one of those seniors, also claimed her 50
th career singles victory as she registered a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Laney Reddick at No. 4. The German is just the 16
th Maverick woman to have ever reached that milestone.
Fellow senior
Jade Brilhante delivered the dual-clincher moments before at No. 3, defeating Bella Hernandez by a 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.
Meanwhile,
Jane Steur posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over MaKayla Martinez at No. 6 after teaming with freshman
Sophie Hartman for a 6-2 win over Martinez and Yelena Travica in a rare doubles start for Steur. That victory clinched the doubles point for the Mavs and gave Hartman her 20
th doubles victory of the season.
Earlier, junior
Devyn Rodriguez and Brilhante posted a 6-1 win over Margot Aebischer and Fernanda Martinez in the top doubles flight. Maier and her partner
Catalina Ballon then won by a 6-2 margin at No. 2 doubles over Bella Hernandez and Reddick to finish the season with a 21-11 record and those most doubles wins for any Mavericks in 14 seasons.
In singles, Ballon trounced Travica, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 before Steur's victory gave the Mavs a 3-0 lead.
Brilhante then closed out her career moments later and finishes her season with a team-best 17 singles wins. The Hawaiian also won eight out her last nine singles encounters.
Following Maier's win, freshman
Valentina Gonzalez claimed a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over the Pack's Fernanda Martinez.
Rodriguez then won 6-2, 6-2 over Aebischer in the top flight match-up, which was the last to be completed.
CSU Pueblo finishes the season with a 1-12 record.
The Mavs have now won 46 straight duals between the teams since 2006. The last 15 of those wins have come by 7-0 sweeps.
