GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team will cap the 2025-26 season at home, hosting the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on Saturday at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The dual, which will begin at 11 a.m., is just the Mavs' third home event of the season.
The Mavericks will enter with an 11-15 record while the ThunderWolves are 1-11.
Last Times Out
The Mavericks played a pair of matches against NCAA Division I Utah Tech last Friday (Apr. 10). They dropped both decisions by 5-2 score although the second dual was counted as an exhibition for the Mavs and not included on their official record.
In the official morning match, the Mavs won the doubles point and picked up a No. 4 singles win from
Delia Maier, who had teamed with
Catalina Ballon to win at No. 2 doubles.
In the afternoon exhibition, the Mavs received singles wins from
Jade Brilhante and Ballon after
Devyn Rodriguez and Brilhante were winners at No. 2 doubles.
20x Winners
The Maverick doubles duo of
Catalina Ballon and
Delia Maier won their 20
th match of the season last Friday morning at Utah Tech. With their 6-0 No. 2 doubles win over the Trailblazers, Ballon and Maier became the first Maverick players to reach the 20-win milestone in a season since the Sera sisters— Kaitlan and Keleen, in 2011-12.
Ballon and Maier are 20-11 overall this season, including a 15-10 record in duals. They also went 5-1 together during fall season tournaments and were ranked fourth in the ITA's NCAA Division II West Region doubles rankings after the fall.
The all-freshman doubles team of Valentina Gonzales and
Sophie Hartman, who were ranked seventh in the region at the end of the fall, could also get to the 20-win mark on Saturday. That pair is currently 19-12 overall and has a 14-11 record at No. 3 doubles in duals this season.
Looking for 50
After surpassing the 100 career win milestone during the Mavs' Mar. 28 dual at Colorado College, Maverick senior
Delia Maier has a chance to claim her 50
th career singles win on Saturday. If she is able to win on Saturday, Maier would become just the 16th Maverick woman to have reached the 50 win mark in singles play. The German is now 49-48 in singles play throughout her after winning last week's official match against Utah Tech.
Maier will enter Saturday with 103 total wins, including 54 doubles victories.
Home Court Advantage
Although the Mavericks do not get to play at home very often, they have enjoyed their time at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The Mavs are 1-1 at home this season having played Division I Utah Tech way back on Feb. 27 before beating Colorado College a day later in their last home match seven weeks ago.
This year's senior class is 10-3 at home as a team throughout their career.
Know Your Foe
The ThunderWolves are 1-11 as a team this season. Their lone win came on Mar. 8 by a 4-3 score over Southwest Baptist during the UT Dallas Invitational.
Since, the Pack has dropped three straight, including an exhibition match more than a month ago on Mar. 14 to Barton County Community College.
That was their last match.
Yelena Travica leads the team with three of the team's combined seven singles wins this spring.
Margot Aebischer, who is 1-9, including a 1-7 record at No. 1 and Fernanda Martinez, who has a 1-11 record, including a 1-9 mark at No. 2 have played in the top flight.
They are also the Pack's No. 1 doubles team and have a 2-9 record in the top flight.
Series History
The Mavericks have dominated the ThunderWolves and have won 45 straight duals against them dating back to 2007. The last 14 matches have been 7-0 Maverick victories.
CMU holds a 54-11 lead in the all-time series, including a 28-3 record at home.
The ThunderWolves last win in the rivalry was on Apr. 22, 2006 during that year's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
