Women's Soccer All-Decade Team

This week Women's Soccer takes over the spotlight, as 11 members (two forwards, four midfielders, four defenders and a goalkeeper) throughout 2010-2019 make our All-Decade team.  The Women's Soccer program has continued to climb the ranks of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) over the last decade, competing against some nationally ranked opponents along the way. Though their schedule will look a little different this year, we'll use the anticipation of the upcoming season to highlight some of the top players to wear maroon and white.

We kick off the All-Decade team with forward Sara Islas. Islas transferred to CMU after playing two seasons at Louisiana Monroe. She would close out her collegiate career with the Mavs as a forward playing in 38 games, starting in all 21 matches as a senior. The Tucson, Arizona native produced three golden goals, scoring eight in total, tallying 17 points to her name. Another member of the successful 2011 squad, she earned Daktronics and D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team, and NSCAA All-Region Second Team honors as a midfielder.

Zoe Peterson takes the second spot for the forward's, playing in 46 games with 34 starts to go along with 25 points to her name. Peterson started in 2017 and finished out her career in 2019, recording nine goals, seven assists and four golden goals. In 2019, she finished with the third most goals on the team with three, giving her the nod for NSCAA All-Region Third Team honors.

Alexis Allard is our first mention in the midfielder's category. The Phoenix, Arizona native just recently capped off her career during the 2019 season where she led the team with five goals, two of which secured the win for the Mavs. A three-time All-RMAC honoree, over the span of four seasons Allard put 19 goals in the back of the net, ranking her 7th All-Time in the record books, holding the same spot in golden goals.
Colorado native, Kelci Crispe was a consistent contributor since her debut season in 2009 through 2012. 78 games with 74 starts, Crispe collected 36 points (12th All-Time) distributed between nine goals and the third most assists with 18. During the 2011 season when the Mavs made it to the NCAA Tournament, Crispe tallied six assists landing her on the NSCCA All-Region Second Team.

Sarah Pope (2012-2015) out of Fresno, California had a stellar freshman season landing on the All-RMAC Second Team, while helping the team reach the RMAC Tournament behind a team high six goals and five assists. In her collegiate debut match Pope scored two goals in a tie against West Texas A&M. As a senior, Pope notched five assists on the season bringing her total to 15, 4th most all-time.

Amanda Wenzel (2014-2017) takes home the final spot in our list of midfielders. From New Castle, Colorado, about an hour outside of Grand Junction, Wenzel scored 11 goals (15th All-Time), along with four assists for 26 points. In her final two seasons with the Mavs, she garnered All-RMAC Honorable Mention honors.

We move towards the back half of the field, mentioning four top defenders for the Mavericks.. Samantha Burneo competed for CMU from 2010-2013, consistently holding down the back half of field for the Mavericks as a primary defender. Burneo was a member of the 2011 squad that made it to the RMAC tournament finals, taking down the then 16th ranked Regis Ranges in the semis. They went on the make a regional appearance that same season, where she was one of the three players to earn NSCAA All-Region Third Team honors as a defender. She also claimed RMAC Academic Player of the Year, in addition to CoSIDA Academic All-American recognition and is still the only player in the history books to garner those awards.

Mackenzie King takes home the next spot in our defender's category. Similar to Islas, King started her career elsewhere but transferred to CMU and closed out her eligibility playing for the home team. A Grand Junction local and product of Fruita Monument, King was a wall in the back half for the Mavs. In her two seasons, she notched three goals, along with six assists. A 2016 All-RMAC Honorable Mention, she capped off her senior season as an All-RMAC Second Team Defender.

Joining King and Burneo in our defender's list is Hannah Naftanel. Hailing from Colorado Springs, Naftanel made the move west in 2016 and dedicated three seasons to the Mavericks. With 41 starts in 42 games, Naftanel scored her lone collegiate goal and the only goal of the game, on Oct. 8, 2017 against Colorado School of Mines. A two-time All-RMAC Honorable Mention honoree at defender, she also took care of the academic aspect earning Academic All-RMAC recognition.

Leilani Wiernicki, a defender out of Stockton, California, started her Maverick career at the beginning of the decade competing through 2013 as in our final mention for the All-Decade Team. Throughout her four seasons, Wiernicki started all 73 matches played, scoring a goal each season while assisting on nine. In her final two seasons, she took home All-RMAC First and Second Team Defender honors.

Coming out of Littleton, Colorado and Chatfield High School is our choice for the All-Decade Goalkeeper, Sarah Schnetzler. Schnetzler recorded 363 saves in four seasons (2nd All-Time), and 20 wins in goal (4th All-Time) for a .771 save percentage. Her 17 shutouts are also 2nd most all-time, three of which came against ranked opponents. A member of the 2011 team that made the NCAA Tournament, Schnetzler secured the shutout against a ranked Regis team in the RMAC Semifinals, sending them to the RMAC Tournament Championship match and the nod for All-Tournament Team. In addition to her numerous RMAC Defensive Player of the Week awards, she also landed on the All-RMAC Third Team in 2012 and capped off her career as an All-RMAC Honorable Mention in 2014.
