The decade of the 2010s was the first complete decade for the Colorado Mesa University men's soccer program. From 2010-19, the Mavericks accomplished two RMAC Championships, one South Central Regional title, five NCAA Tournament and nine RMAC Tournament appearances, nine All-American selections, and 24 different all-regional selections.
Â
Of the eleven players on this list (three forwards, four midfielders, three defenders, and one goalkeeper), all have earned their keep in establishing one of the best collegiate soccer programs in all of NCAA Division II.
Â
Despite playing only two seasons from 2016-17, Malik Mennana did not disappoint in helping CMU reach their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. If Mennana's senior year was in any other season, he would have probably been the team's best scorer, lone behold, he had an All-American in
Kevin Del Mazo on the same field.
Â
The Denver native scored only three goals in his first season in 2016, along with 11 points, but then jumped to nine goals and 21 points in 2017. He currently stands sixth all-time in career goals and seventh all-time in career points in CMU history.
Â
Without question, Roy Abergil belongs on this list. He is the only Maverick to surpass 100 career points and 40 goals and currently stands as the top scorer in program history. In total, Abergil has 46 career goals and 103 points.
Â
The Beercheeva, Israel native played in Grand Junction from 2014-16. His senior season still stands as the best of any Maverick with 23 goals and 47 points. To clarify, Abergil scored more times in one season than any other CMU soccer player has the span of their entire career. Nine times in 2016 he had multiple-goal outings and he had two separate five-game scoring streaks.
Â
Twice in his career, Abergil was named a Daktronics/D2CCA All-American, once Honorable Mention (2014) and once First Team (2016). He was also named USC/NSCAA All-American First Team in 2016.
Â
Other accolades from Abergil's career consist of three D2CCA All-Central Region First Team selections, two NSCAA All-Region First Team selections, three All-RMAC nods, and one RMAC Player of the Year Award in 2016.
Â
Currently, Roy is currently back in his home country of Israel playing professional soccer.
Â
Another international player in
Lawan Abary has cemented his name after a short two-year stint as a Maverick. The 6'4" Niger native transferred from Western Nebraska CC in 2018 and instantly turned into one of most prolific CMU scores of the latter half of the decade.
Â
Abary's 2018 got off to a hot start when Lawan set a school record for most goals scored in a single game when he put up four goals against Western Colorado. He would go on to score a team-high 14 goals and 29 points off 57 shots. He played and started in all 20 games including two NCAA Tournament appearances.
Â
Lawan made All-RMAC First Team and the All-RMAC Tournament team in 2018. In 2019, Abary struggled with injury early on in the season that limited him to only 10 starts. He did get three All-Region nods throughout his career including two First Team selections in 2018.Â
Â
The Escobar brothers are one of the few sibling pairs to play at CMU at the same time. Marco had the chance to play with his two brothers, Kevin and Nestor, throughout his four years as a Maverick.
Â
From 2010-14, Marco commanded the midfield and played a prominent role in CMU's first trip to the RMAC Tournament in 2010 and then their success in the following three seasons. During his career, Escobar was named to both the NSCAA All-South Central Region and Daktronics All-South Central Region First Team in 2013, NSCAA All-South Central Region Second Team and All-RMAC First Team in 2012, and an additional RMAC All-Tournament Team.
Â
Escobar is sixth in CMU all-time career points with his most coming in his senior year where he recorded a team-high seven assists and 17 points.
Â
The second Escobar brother on this list, Nestor Escobar, followed the example left by Marco. He led the team in assists with eight in 2014 when the Mavericks went to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals after winning the NCAA South Central Regional. Nestor was named to the Daktronics All-Region Second Team that same season.
Â
In his freshman year, Escobar recorded one of the best outings for any CMU freshman midfielder after racking up two goals, six assists, and 10 points.
Â
He finished his career as the all-time assist leader with 17 but currently stands at third all-time after being surpassed by
Kevin Del Mazo and Moshe Perez.
Â
The most recent name on this list to earn All-American honors is
Kevin Del Mazo. The all-time assist leader in CMU history graduated back in 2018 after recording four outstanding years in the maroon and gold.
Â
The Santiago, Chile native finessed the soccer ball better than anyone under 5"7" and won awards while doing so. A USC/NSCAA All-America Third-Team nod in 2018 was the highlight but Del Mazo also earned four different All-Region, two All-RMAC, and two All-RMAC Tournament selections while at CMU.Â
Â
From his freshman to senior year, Del Mazo continued to increase his level of play and was the epicenter of the Maverick offense. In 2018, he recorded seven goals, ten assists, and 24 points to cap off his career with 20 total goals, 28 assists, and 68 points. All three rank within the top three in program history.
Â
Peter Vandam is the only active player on the CMU roster to make the All-Decade Team. The redshirt-senior has been with the Mavericks since 2017 and has recorded 11 minutes short of 3,000 career playing minutes. In the 61 games he has appeared in, Vandam has started in 46 in the midfield.
Â
As a sophomore, Vandam earned his first USC/NSCAA All-Region selection as well as being named All-RMAC Honorable Mention. The following year, in 2019, Peter was selected All-RMAC Honorable Mention for the second year in a row.
Â
The Missoula native has recorded seven points and two goals throughout his career and plays a prominent leadership role among the current CMU roster that carries 15 upperclassmen and seven seniors.
Â
All three defenders on this list were named as an All-American at some points in their career. The most recent from 2018 is
James McGhee.
Â
McGhee was named to not just the USC/NSCAA All-America Second Team in 2018 but also the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team. He is the only CMU Maverick to be named to both All-American teams.
Â
Throughout his career, McGhee played in 66 total games from 2015-18 which accumulates to 3,733 total minutes on the pitch. In that span, James was the leader of the CMU went 57-15-13 which is the best four-year span in program history. Two of the four years CMU has the top defense in the RMAC.
Â
James was named to two All-RMAC Tournament, three All-RMAC, two South Central All-Region teams in his career as a Maverick.
Â
For five seasons from 2012-17, Slater Elkind was a part of the CMU men's soccer program but only played in three seasons. He redshirted in 2012 and then sat out of the 2015 season, however, his final two years as a Maverick were two of the best years a defensive man could possibly have.
Â
He played and started in all 42 games from 2016-17 being named All-Region First Team in both years and then being named an All-American in 2017. The Mavericks made the NCAA Tournament for the third and fourth consecutive year with Elkind leading the defense. He also won RMAC Defensive Player of the year in 2017, making him the second Maverick to win the award.
Â
Blake Carlson was the first-ever All-American and RMAC Defensive Player of the Year in CMU history and for good reason. The Oregon native commanded the backfield with is demanding 6'5" frame and set the standard for dominant and defensive soccer in the CMU locker room.
Â
From 2012-15, Carlson started in every game but three out of the 77 total he played in the maroon and gold which adds up to over 5,000 total minutes played. He saw his team go from an 8-7-4 record in 2012 to RMAC Tournament Champions in 2013, then eventually back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances including the 2014 NCAA National Semifinals run.
Â
Briley Guarneri leads the pack of talented and dominant goalkeepers CMU has established in the last ten years. The Gilbert, AZ native played and started in every single game for the Mavericks from 2015-18 making him the minutes leader over that four-year span and of any goalkeeper in CMU history with 7,512.
Â
Over the course of his career, Guarneri recorded an overall save percentage of .803 with 252 career saves. He holds the most wins of any CMU goalkeeper with 54 and the lowest goal against percentage of 0.743.
Â
In 2018, Briley was named the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year along with a USC/NSCAA All-Region First-Team selection, the first of any CMU keeper to do so. He also earned two South Central All-Region Second Team selections in 2017.
