EVANSVILLE, Ind.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks will have seven individual swimmers, a diver and both of their 400-yard freestyle relay teams involved in the championship finals and will once again be represented in all 11 events of the evening session after another strong preliminary round session during the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday here at the Deaconess Aquatics Center.
The Mavericks also clinched team points in both the men's and women's 1,650-yard freestyle as the slower sections of the timed finals event were swum at the end of the preliminary session.
Here's an event-by-event breakdown of the Mavs' preliminary rounds performances.
100 Freestyle
Ada Qunell qualified fourth for the championship final and won her heat with a time of 49.99 seconds. She was seeded sixth coming into the meet.
Teammate
Kendyll Wilkinson finished 26
th with a season-best time of 51.06 seconds, improving upon her No. 34 pre-meet seed.
On the men's side
Guillaume Guth also won his heat with a time of 42.79 seconds and will be the No. 3 seed in the championship final.
Elsewhere,
Ben Vester finished 36
th in 44.54 seconds while
Oskar Sawicki (44.70) and
Jonas Friess (44.73) finished 39
th and 40
th, respectively.
200 Backstroke
Freshman
Abby Uhl earned her first NCAA Championship scoring opportunity, taking 13
th in the preliminary heats with a time of 2:00.79. She will swim in the consolation final.
Taylar Hooton was 29
th in 2:06.34.
On the men's side,
Richard Schmiedefeld continued his strong week, posting a career-best time of 1:44.32 to snag the last spot in the championship final with an eighth place finish. He moved up to third in CMU history ahead of teammate
Luka Samsonov with the effort after coming into the meet seeded 24
th and not expected to score.
Samsonov finished 18
th in 1:45.89 and is the second alternate for Saturday's consolation finals.
200 Breaststroke
Coming off a school-record and consolation final win in the 100 breast on Friday night, CMU's
Melina Giraudeau was the top qualifier in the 200, finishing her preliminary heat in 2:13.10.
Antonia Leese tied for 32
nd with a time of 2:20.92 while
Maya Clise was 39
th with a time of 2:23.84.
Meanwhile,
Aron Jonsson, who also won the 100 breast consolation final on Friday, snagged a spot in the men's championship final, winning his heat while qualifying fourth overall in 1:56.52.
Marcos Otero also turned in a solid time of 1:58.56 to finish tenth and grab a lane for the consolation final.
Both did much better than their pre-meet seeds of 14
th and 18
th, respectively.
CMU's third entrant
Brodie Khajuria finished 21
st in 2:00.87, also finishing four spots higher than his pre-meet seeding.
Miles Moran finished 27
th in 2:03.71 to round out the Mavs' performances.
1650 Freestyle
Sydnee O'Neil clinched a Second Team CSCAA All-America honor and at least one team point as she posted a season-best time of 17:08.78 to win her section. She stands in eighth place out of the 20 women who swam in three sections of the timed finals event, held at the end of the preliminary session.
O'Neil was seeded 25
th coming in to the meet and will finish no lower than 16
th.
The top eight seeds, including CMU's
Olivia Hansson and
Hanna Sasivarevic will swim at the start at the finals session at 5:30 p.m. CDT (4:30 p.m. Mountain). Hansson is seeded second at 16:31.46 while Sasivarevic is seeded eighth at 16:56.04.
Melaina Howard also competed in the morning and is in 14
th place with her time of 17:16.64.
Gavyn Tatge also fared well in the men's races, setting a personal-best of 15:24.61. He is currently in sixth place and is guaranteed of at least 14
th and a new career-best NCAA Championship finish.
Top eight men's seeds will also swim following Hansson and Sasivarevic' s race.
Women's 1-Meter Diving
Kenya Meyer led five Maverick women, finishing fourth in the preliminaries with an 11-dive score of 435.50 points. She will dive in the championship final.
Three more Mavs in
Talia Datilio,
Emma Lence and
Jenna Hurley advanced to the consolation final, which will begin shortly.
Datilio scored 406.45 points in the preliminaries to finish 11
th. Lence scored 399.60 and was 14
th while Hurley was last in the diving order and scored 394.10 points. She knocked out teammate
Mimi Licht from the consolation final on the final dive as Licht ended up 17
th with 387.95 points.
