Payne breaks school record, Harris wins at Power 5

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa junior sprinter Jill Payne continued the strong start to her 2018-19 indoor season breaking her own school-record in the 400 meters, which along with a men's high jump victory by redshirt freshman Ethan Harris were the biggest of several highlights of the day for the Maverick track & field squads at The Power 5 Meet, hosted by UCCS on Saturday.

Payne finished second in both the 200 and 400 meters, running an improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 56.36 seconds (55.84-converted) in the latter surpassing the former Maverick standard of 56.65, which she clocked last month at the Western Colorado Open.  The Grand Junction native also ran a time of 25.72 in the 200 and also anchored the Mavericks' 4x400-meter relay team to a third place finish in 3:58.68, the third fastest in program history.

Meanwhile, Harris cleared 2.01 meters (6 feet, 7 inches) to win that event while freshman teammate Connor McGraw and Brant Killmon placed fourth and fifth after both cleared 1.91 meters (6-3.25).

As a team, the Mavericks finished with 114 total points to finish fifth.  The host Mountain Lions won the title and the travelling trophy with 246 ½ combined points from both men's and women's events.

The Mavericks also had five other runner-up finishes as Sarah Cerrone cleared 1.61 meters (5-3.25) in the women's high jump.  McKayla Thomas and Sydney Trichler also scored points in that event taking fifth and sixth, respectively.  Thomas cleared 1.56 meters (5-1.25) while Trichler went out a bar earlier after clearing 1.51 meters (4-11.5) to move into a tie for 10th in program history.

Trichler also ran with McKenna Molder, Haley Golden and Payne on the 4X400-meter relay team.

Another second place finish came from women's pole vaulter Spencer Elder, who cleared 3.22 meters (10-6.75).

Meanwhile, Marshall McKown finished second in the men's weight throw with a heave of 16.03 meters (52-7.25) to take second, ahead of teammate Angel Bautista (15.37m/50-5.25), who placed fifth.  McKown also scored in the shot put finishing sixth with a mark of 14.33 meters (47-0.25)

Another runner-up finish came from D'Angelo Foster, who ran a time of 8.31 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle finials after running a time of 8.20 in the prelims to barely miss the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 8.22 seconds with the altitude penalty of 0.04 seconds.

Meanwhile, the quartet of Carl Heide, Will Schmidt, Max Carter-Kemp and Jaq Grant, finished second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:25.67, the third fastest time in CMU history.

Carter-Kemp, third at 52.07, and Grant, fourth at 52.17, also scored points in the individual 400-meter discipline while Jerod Kuhn took fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.46.  In the mile, Tony Torres finished eighth in 4:32.68 to move up a spot to fifth in program history.

Fellow distance runner Mako Watanabe also finished just outside of the points in the 3,000 meters taking seventh in 9:18.45, becoming the eighth fastest Maverick of all-time over that distance.

Another solid field event mark came from Spencer Jahr, who matched his PR with a long jump effort of 6.97 meters (22-10.5) to place fourth.

Freshman Chian DeLoach scored in two events, taking fourth in the triple jump at 11.16 meters (36-7.5) and fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.49 meters (18-0.25).

Danielle Pickert also took fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 13.69 meters (44-11) in her season-debut.

In the women's sprints, Brooklynn York finished 10th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.81 seconds, the fourth fastest in program history.  Meanwhile, Sierra Arceneaux finished fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.30 while Molder was clocked in 59.22 over 400 meters to take fourth.

The Mavericks will resume their season next Friday and Saturday at the Mines D-II Invitational & Multi in Golden.
