GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's swimming and diving team racked up 13 event wins and seven NCAA Division II Championship qualifying marks en-route to a comfortable and wire-to-wire 192-67 Senior Day and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual victory over Western Colorado University on Friday here at the El Pomar Natatorium.
The victory, which came in CMU's final home meet of the season, was CMU's 16
th straight RMAC dual win over the past 3-plus years and allowed them to finish the 2018-09 season with a perfect 5-0 mark in RMAC duals. Seven of those wins in the streak have come against the Mountaineers, who won three events in Friday's dual.
The Mavericks, ranked 11
th nationally according to the latest TYR/CSCAA Division II Coaches' Poll, were led by three event wins and two NCAA "B" cut times from sophomore
Sierra Forbord. They also had four other double-winners the individual events in
Brittany Dixon,
Danielle Jefferies,
Robyn Naze and
Grace Payton and won both the 400-yard medley and 200 free relays to book-end the comprehensive team victory.
Jefferies was one of three Maverick women's seniors honored before the dual along with several Maverick men, who contested a scrimmage in conjunction with the women's dual.
Forbord recorded a pair of NCAA "B" cut times in the 100 and 200 free and won the 50 free as well while divers
Brittany Dixon and sophomore
Natalya Dahlke each set NCAA qualifying marks on both the 1 and 3-meter diving boards in exhibition events that were not figured into the team score. Dixon won both, scoring 424.50 points over 11 dives on the 1-meter and edged Dahlke on the 3-meter with 267.75 points over six dives. Dahlke had 266.25 points on the higher board and recorded 409.86 on the 1-meter to record her first two national qualifying marks of the season.
Senior
Abby Smith also recorded a national qualifying mark on the 1-meter with 397.95 points to finish third.
Meanwhile, in the swimming pool, Forbord clocked a time of 1:54.68 to win the 200 free, the first of her three individual and four total victories, with ease as the Mavericks claimed one of their ten 1-2-3 sweeps of the day.
Maddie Pressler (1:58.28) and
Kennedy Bright (1:59.19) were second and third, respectively.
Forbord then claimed the 50 free in 24.33 seconds ahead of Sam White (24.47) and
Tally Danielson (25.29) before coming out of a mid-meet break to take the 100 free in a "B" cut time of 52.15. In the process, she out-touched WCU's Randi Yarnell (52.24), the 2018 NCAA Division II National Runner-up in the event, who did claim two of the Mountaineers' three victories on the day with triumphs in the 100 and 200 butterfly.
Forbord then turned in a 24.44 50 free split to lead-off the Mavs' victorious 200 free relay team, which was also comprised of
Samantha White, Pressler and
Natalie Saul.
Saul had also anchored the winning the 400 medley relay team to begin the meet as Payton, Jefferies,
Candice Rosen and Saul combined for a time of 3:58.64 and a nearly four-second win over the Mountaineers.
Naze then recorded a time of 10:52.53 to win the 1000 free with
Maddie McClain (11:20.93) and Maddie Batkiewicz (11:28.93) completing the 1-2-3 sweep. That trio also later took the same places in the 500 free with Naze touching first in 5:21.02. McClain was second in 5:28.93 while Batkiewicz finished in 5:37.30.
In between, Jefferies swept the breaststroke events winning the 100 in 1:06.92 and the 200 in 2:27.54.
Ginger Bryant finished second in the 100 with a time of 1:08.56 and was third in the 200 at 2:30.73. Maverick freshman
Natalya Nelson was third in the 100 at 1:10.44 while
Kennedy Bright was second in the 200 with a time of 2:28.14.
Payton claimed her two individual wins in the 200 back and 400 IM. She won the backstroke event in 2:08.17 with teammates
Sarah Fillerup (2:09.55) and
Jordyn Beem (2:11.16) finishing just behind. Payton's time in the 400 IM was 4:41.04 with Bright (4:41.86) finishing less than a second later. Naze was third in 4:49.49.
Payton also finished second in the 100 back in 59.58, just behind Western's Savannah Tice (58.89).
Yarnell's victories came in the 200 fly (2:08.22) and 100 fly (57.95). CMU's
Bella Walters was the top Maverick in the 200, taking second in 2:18.77. She also finished third in the 100 at 1:01.43 just behind freshman teammate
Logan Anderson (1:01.35).
Fillerup also finished third in the 100 back at 1:00.13 while Saul took third in the 100 free at 54.04.
The Maverick divers will have one more championship tune-up meet competing on Feb. 1 at the Air Force Invitational. CMU's swimmers are off until the Feb. 13-16 RMAC Championships in Lewisville, Texas.
