PUEBLO, Colo.— Freshman
Devin Shea won the high jump and took third in the long jump as the Colorado Mesa University men's track & field team scored team points in all five field events of the day plus the decathlon while advancing nine total runners to Sunday's finals on the track during an impressive second day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday here at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.
The Mavericks combined for 33 ½ team points throughout the day and are in fourth place in the team standings through eight scored events with 13 more to come on Sunday.
Shea, cleared 2.05 meters (6 feet, 8 ¾ inches) in the high jump, an 8-centimeter (3 ¼ inches) improvement over his previous season-best and moved up a spot to fifth in Maverick history.
That effort came after he recorded a wind-aided long jump mark of 7.36 meters (24-1.75) on his final attempt.
Both of his marks were NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying efforts as well.
Fellow freshman
Weston Domich also recorded a seventh place long jump mark of 7.04 meters (23-1.25).
Cooper Van Maurer, another CMU freshman, also turned in career-best of 4.62 meters (15-1.75) to finish in a tie for fourth in the pole vault. He continues to rank sixth in program history.
In the throws,
Austin Schultz had an outdoor career-best of 15.54 meters (51-0) to take fifth in the shot put while
Van Chambers grabbed sixth place in the discus throw with a mark of 47.33 meters (155-3).
Kaiden Major also made the finals in the discus, placing ninth with a career-best of 45.64 meters (149-9) to move into the No. 8 spot of CMU history.
Meanwhile,
Asa Keim took fifth in the decathlon with a score of 6,360 points while moving up three spots to fourth in program history. The freshman's day was highlighted by a pole vault clearance of 4.74 meters (15-6.5), which moved hm all the way to fourth in CMU history. That mark was nearly a foot higher than any of the other 14 decathletes. Keim also fared second best in the javelin throw with a mark of 48.92 meters (160-6).
On the track, the Mavs were led by
Teo Casados and
Joseph Randolph.
Casados, the defending conference champion in both the 100 and 200, qualified first for Sunday's 100-meter final after running to a wind-aided preliminary round time of 10.38 seconds. Randolph also qualified fourth in a wind-aided 10.44 seconds while
Marik Cummings snagged a lane in the final as well with a ninth place tie of 10.64 seconds.
In the 200, Randolph and Casados won their respective heats while qualifying first and second. Randolph posted an improved, but wind-aided NCAA provisional qualifying time of 20.88 seconds while Casados finished his heat, run with a +4.5 meter-per-second tailwind, in 20.98 seconds.
In the 800 meters, freshman
Vasileios Salpas qualified for the finals with a time of 1:51.69, second best in his heat and fifth best overall.
The Mavs also qualified three men for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles.
Aiden Brownell won his heat and qualified third overall in 53.78 seconds while
Blake Ames (54.42) and
Logan Hafey (54.78) both set season-bests to qualify seventh and eighth, respectively. Ames' time was also a career-best.
Brownell also finished ninth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.90 seconds.
The Mavs' also had three new personal-best efforts in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Ryan O'Loughlin finished ninth in 9:33.50, improving his No. 2 position in program history by 1.35 seconds. Meanwhile,
Dominick Muller moved up two spots to fifth in CMU lore with a 17
th place time of 9:44.04.
Owen Frank also shaved more than six seconds off his former best, placing 20
th in 9:49.08.
The Maverick women are also in fourth place after the second day of the meet with 21 team points.
