GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The two Colorado Mesa University seniors that were in Saturday afternoon's dual lineup against Chadron State College capped an otherwise tough dual for the Mavericks, who were downed by visiting Chadron State College, 22-12 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's wrestling action here in Brownson Arena.
The Eagles, ranked 17
th in the country, finished the dual portion of their schedule with a 6-3 overall and 4-2 RMAC records while the Mavs, ranked 22
nd, fell to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in RMAC action.
The Eagles won four tight decisions at the start of the dual and took a 12-0 lead before Maverick
Owen Cline, ranked seventh in the country at 157 pounds, stopped the stretch with a 10-3 victory. The Eagles then won the next three bouts to build a 22-3 lead before CMU fifth-year seniors
Gabriel Carranza, ranked eighth at 197 pounds, and
Ruben Samuelson delivered victories in what were their final home matches of their careers.
The pair was honored before the dual along with four other Mavericks, who did not compete in the home finale. That list included
Hector De La Cruz,
Oran Huff,
Jorge Torres,
Ryan Wheeler.
Carranza improved to 14-4 on the year with his hard-fought 10-6 decision over CSC's Mason Villwok, the reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Week, who fell to 14-4.
Samuelson then pinned Eli Reese just 66 seconds in to the 285-pound bout to improve to 12-5. Ten of his victories have been by pin the first period.
All five of the nationally-ranked wrestlers in action for the two teams combined were victorious as CSC's Quade Smith, tabbed fourth in the country at 125 pounds, claimed a defensive 1-0 win over Maverick redshirt freshman
Adonias Cantu.
The Eagles then came out victorious in a pair of sudden victory overtime matches at 133 and 149 pounds surrounding a come from behind 12-7 win at 141 from 14
th-ranked Caleb Chaves.
Cline, the first of the two nationally-ranked Mavericks then delivered his win over Brandon Paaredes to improve to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in RMAC duals with his third straight and sixth win in his last seven matches. That victory sliced the Eagles' lead to 12-3.
The Eagles then claimed decisions at 165 and 174 pounds before fourth-ranked Keegan Gelhausen added another win for the visitors by a 17-4 major decision to extend CSC's lead to 22-3.
The Mavericks will close out the dual season on Friday (Feb. 13) at arch-rival Western Colorado University.
Both teams will then compete at the NCAA Super Region VI Championships in Golden, Colorado on Feb. 28.
