GUNNISON, Colo.— Juan Garcia,
Gunnar Neal and
Logan Noble all won their respective weight classes as the Colorado Mesa University wrestling team showed its strong depth at Sunday's Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open here in Western Colorado University's Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
Fourteen Maverick reserves placed in the tournament, designed for back-ups and redshirts from around the region to complete their season before starters from their respective schools compete at the Feb. 28 NCAA Division II Super Regional VI Championships.
Garcia went 4-0 with two first-period pins to take the 149-pound title and took down Issac Chavarria, an unattached wrestler on Western Colorado's roster, just 68 seconds into the final.
Neal, who went 17-4 in five tournaments this season, outscored his three Sunday opponents 48-8 en route to the 174-pound win, his second straight tournament title. Neal has now won seven straight bouts.
He recorded 16-1 and 18-1 technical fall wins over unattached wrestlers in the first two rounds before recording a 16-6 major decision win over Adams State's Daniel Long in the final.
Meanwhile, Noble went 2-1 to place first in the 4-man round-robin at 197 pounds. He had two wins by fall, including a second round pin over teammate
Brady Samuelson, who placed third.
Auston Eudaly was the Mavs' lone runner-up going, 2-1 to finish second in the 157-pound bracket.
Sammy Mobly went 3-1 and won his final three matches to take third in that weight class. He won a 20-17 shootout over teammate
Keyton Young in the third place match.
Bryan Yanase also placed third in an injury depleted 141-pound round-robin.
Tanner Stone (133),
Jorge Torres (141) and
Tommy Thomas (165) joined Young as fourth place finishers while
Murphy Harris (133) and
Wil Moneypenny (165) both took fifth.
Riley Valdez finished sixth at 133 pounds, falling to Harris in his final match.
