ALLENDALE, Mich.— Colorado Mesa University freshmen
Clayton Wilson and
Vasleios Salpas both turned in school-record setting times while Salpas and
Kammi Merritt added their names on to the NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying list during a fine set of Maverick track & field efforts at the GVSU Big Meet on Friday here in the Lakers' Turf Building.
Wilson won his heat of the 3,000 meters in eight minutes, 16.94 seconds to break Tony Torres' former Maverick record of 8:22.17 by more than five seconds.
Salpas, running for the first time in his collegiate career, had a time of 1:50.66 in the 800 meters to take down Torres' record of 1:51.30, which had also stood since 2022. The Greek native now ranks 25
th on the national performance list as of Friday night.
Torres was a 2-time track & field all-American for the Mavs.
Meanwhile,
Kyle Towne finished the 800 in 1:55.18 while
Chase Brown turned in a career-best mile time of 4:13.93 to move up a spot to third in CMU history.
The Maverick women also had some impressive times as Merritt and
Jordan Staniszewski both finished in the top-10 of their respective events.
Merritt turned in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 56.41 in the 400 meters, placing tenth while Staniszewski finished seventh in the 800, with a career-best time of 2:15.93. Merritt moved up a spot to fourth in CMU lore while Staniszewski surged to second, behind only
Brooke Miller, who also ran to a time of 2:18.20 in the 800 on Friday.
Elsewhere,
Megan Hodges also took over the No. 2 spot in CMU history in the mile, turning in an effort of 4:56.02 in the invitational section, nearly 20 seconds faster than her former career-best. She was ranked seventh in CMU history coming in to the day.
The Mavs will compete in the second of two weekend meets here on Saturday.
Another group of Maverick athletes
were also in action on Friday at the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
