Cavarno tabbed RMAC Golfer of the Week

CMU fifth-year senior leads Mavs to second straight win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— After helping the Mavericks to win their second consecutive tournament, Colorado Mesa University redshirt senior Timmy Cavarno was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Men's Golfer of the Week on Thursday.

The Redlands, California native finished third overall in a field of 62 players at Monday and Tuesday's San Juan Intercollegiate presented by Timberline Bank with a 54-hole score of 204, which was nine shots under par.  He was the RMAC's top golfer at the event and helped the Mavericks post their second best 54-hole tournament team score (828; -24) in program history to win the title by five shots over NCAA Division II South Central Region rival West Texas A&M.

Cavarno was under par in all three rounds, carding scores of 70, 65 and 69 in his laps around the Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose, which played as a par-71 and at 7,017 yards.  He made 17 birdies throughout the tournament, recording six during his bogey free second round, which began on Monday and concluded on Tuesday morning after a weather-related suspension.

In the process, he led the Mavs to a 14-under par team score of 270 in that round, CMU's second best round in program history.  The Mavs also had a 13-under par score of 271, the third best in program history, in Monday's first round, before hanging on to the tournament win with a 287 (+3) in the final round.

The Mavericks, ranked 19th in the Golfweek/Bushnell NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll, have won both of their first two tournaments and have laid claim to both of the RMAC Golfer of the Week awards this season.

Dylan Everett won the initial award last Thursday (Sept. 18) after winning the individual title at the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational in Sheridan, Wyoming on Sept. 15-16.

The Mavericks will take their hot streak across international boarders this week, playing in Sunday through Tuesday's Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya, which will be played at the Tulum Country Club in Akumal, Mexico.
