ALAMOSA, Colo.— Led by a 19-kill, 18-dig double-double from senior
Sadie Scoville and another 19 combined kills from fellow outside hitters
Karsen Breeding and
Emma Luce, the nation's 23
rd-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks pulled out a 5-set thriller over host Adams State University in both team's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball opener on Friday night here in Plachy Hall.
Maverick setters
Addie Swanson and
Ashlyn Tafoya also registered double-doubles while Maverick middle blockers
Aesha Alrashed and
Macy Wood each recorded nine kills on .400 hitting as the Mavs finished with a .247 team attack percentage.
Each of the first four sets were decided by the minimum two points before Luce finished off a 15-12 fifth-set victory to give the Mavs their tenth straight win over the Grizzlies since 2016.
The Mavs took the first two sets by 25-23 and 27-25 margins before the Grizzlies won the third by a 27-25 scoreline. The hosts, led by 23 kills from Hadleigh Richardson, then won the fourth by a 25-23 margin to force the fifth.
The Mavs never trailed in the final frame, building an 11-6 lead on an Alrashed block before a 6-3 Grizzly spurt brought ASU back into the match at 14-12. However, Luce banged her seventh kill of the night off a Grizzly defender to finish off CMU's win.
The victory moved CMU to 5-3 overall while the Grizzlies fell to 3-7 with their sixth loss in the last seven matches.
The five sets were tied a combined 49 times and featured 16 total lead changes.
Scoville's kill and dig totals were the highest of her season. She also added five blocks and hit a respectable .255 while registering her third double-double of the campaign to date.
Meanwhile, Breeding tallied a career-high 12 kills.
Swanson, a redshirt freshman, also set new season and career-highs with 36 assists and 11 digs to record her first collegiate double-double of the season while Tafoya, a true freshman had 27 assists and 11 digs, to register her second double-double.
In addition to her offensive contribution on .471 hitting, Wood also managed seven blocks, including a pair of solos, while Alrashed chipped in two solos and four total blocks while hitting at a .421 clip.
Allison Waller, returning to the lineup after missing last week's Cal State LA Tournament due to injury, chipped in 17 digs as well.
Richardson, who hit .352 offensively, had 14 digs for ASU while libero Logan Conlin recorded 26 digs for the Grizzlies.
The Mavs trailed for much of the first set and were down 18-14 in it, before rallying to tie the set at 21 and again at 22 on one of Scoville's five opening-set kills. The Grizzlies then took a 23-22 lead on a Richardson kill before the Grizzly outside hitter committed two errors to give the Mavs a set point at 24-23, something they took advantage of with a set-capping Alrashed kill.
The Mavs then led early in the second set and had as much as a 3-point advantage on multiple occasions, including at 15-12.
However, the Grizzlies roared back with a 6-1 run to take an 18-17 lead.
They Grizzlies also led 23-21 later in the set before two Maverick blocks around a Scoville kill put the Mavs in front 24-23.
Errors then plagued both teams as the Mavs went on to take the 2-0 overall advantage after a Grizzly service error and hitting miscue by Amar'e Stout.
The Mavs then went on to hit .308 as a team in the third set and had a match point at 24-23 but were unable to close out the frame as Richardson put down three kills in the waning stages to help the Grizzlies pull out the 27-25 win and stay alive in the match.
The fourth set was just as tight and was tied on 17 separate occasions including at 21 before two Richardson kills and her tandem block with Katie Bauer in between put ASU in front, 24-21.
Breeding and Luce then registered kills to pull CMU within one at 24-23 before Richardson sent the match to a fifth set with her seventh kill of the fourth set alone.
Early in the fifth, Scoville took over recording kills on four of the Mavs' first six points as CMU went up, 6-3.
The Mavs later extended the lead to 11-6 after a 3-0 run that featured a
Marli Clausi ace and Alrashed block.
A successful ASU video reply challenge then helped stop the Mavs' momentum as the Grizzlies went on a 4-1 spurt to claw within 12-10.
Scoville then came out of a timeout to record her final kill of the match before the teams exchanged points to make the score, 14-11.
ASU would go on to fight off one match point thanks to an Oliva Lunt kill before Luce finished off the victory.
The Mavs will continue a weekend road trip in to New Mexico on Saturday night and will play at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas at 7 o'clock. The Cowgirls also played a 5-setter on Friday night, falling at home to Westminster to fall to 4-5 on the season.
