Mavs split 4-set matches in L.A.

CMU bounces back for win over host Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES— The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team split a pair of 4-set matches on Friday at the Cal State LA Tournament, falling to No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona before bouncing back for an evening win over the host Golden Eagles here in the University Gym.
 
The split put the nation's 18th-ranked Mavericks' record at 4-2 heading into a Saturday afternoon clash with No. 14 Simon Fraser, which is 5-0 after defeating the same two opponents over the last two days.

The Mavericks got off to a slow start, dropping the first and second sets by 25-16 and 25-18 scores but were able to rally for a 25-20 third set win.  The Broncos (2-2) then won the fourth set, 25-22, to close out the match.
 
Kaitlyn Hall led the Mavericks with 12 kills while hitting an impressive .524.  Aesha Alrashed and Charleston Tidwell also added nine kills apiece.  Alrashed hit .562 while Tidwell hit .292 while adding 12 digs.
 
Freshman setter Ashlyn Tafoya recorded 28 assists while Addie Swanson managed 14.
 
Both offenses were clicking as the Broncos hit .331 while the Mavs were able to record a .316 team attack percentage.
 
The Broncos put down 62 kills as Elle Walker and Sarah Ybarra both put down 17.
 
Cal State LA Recap
 
The Mavericks used a balanced attack in their 4-set (25-22, 21-25, 25-13, 25-22) win as Henley Madsen and Sadie Scoville both registered 12 kills while Emma Luce added a career-high 11.  Hall was also in double figures for the second straight match with ten.
 
Madsen hit .526 while Hall hit at a .333 pace.
 
Luce also recorded 11 digs to register her first double-double.  Scoville also had a double-double from the outside with 12 digs.
 
Freshman Addison Wright also made her first career start at libero, recording 11 digs.
 
Tafoya had 22 assists while Swanson recorded 20.
 
The Mavericks finished with a 55-44 edge in total kills and recorded seven service aces without giving up a single one.
 
Swanson had back-to-back aces early in the first set helping the Mavericks go on a 6-0 run that eventually led to the opening set victory.
 
After dropping the second set, the Mavericks jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the third.  They then extended the lead to as many as eight points at 16-8 and again at 21-13 before Wright had consecutive aces in a 5-0 set-ending run that also featured kills from Scoville, Tafoya and Madsen.
 
The Mavs then maintained a small lead through most of the fourth set and were able to close out the match with a Luce kill followed by an Alrashed and Hall block after the Golden Eagles had pulled within a point at 23-22.
 
The Mavs hit .213 as a team and held the Golden Eagles to a .139 clip.
