GOLDEN, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Teo Casados had a day to remember as he won both the 100 and 200-meter individual titles while setting a pair of school records and booking a spot in next month's national championships on Sunday, the last day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships here at the Colorado School of Mines' Stremole Track & Field Complex.
Casados started the day by anchoring the Mavs' 4x100-meter relay team to a school-record and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 40.21 seconds as he,
Amaris Mora,
Marik Cummings and
Quentin Hartel broke the former CMU standard of 40.33.
Casados then came back to win the 100 meters in 10.43 seconds, breaking his own weeks-old record of 10.46. He then saved the best for last, dominating the 200 in a wind-aided mark of 20.35 seconds, the fastest ever clocking in CMU history. Although that time was recorded with a +3.5-meter-per-second tailwind and thus ineligible for the official Maverick record, it was still legal of NCAA Championship qualifying purposes and puts him third on the national performance list at 20.42 seconds (altitude-adjusted), easily qualifying him for the May 22-24 NCAA Division II National Championships in Pueblo.
In the process, Casados was responsible for 22 team points throughout the day as he finished atop track athletes and second in the overall meet MVP chase while leading the Mavs to a fourth place finish with 71 total points.
Cummings also scored in the 100, placing seventh in 10.69 seconds.
Elsewhere,
Justin Blanton finished eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 48.51 seconds, just off his season-best of 48.44.
Freshman
Aidan Brownell also scored in both hurdling events, placing fifth in the 400 with a time of 53.96 seconds after taking seventh in the 110s at 15.09 seconds.
Logan Hafey also managed an eighth place finish and time of 57.29 seconds in the 400 hurdles.
Chase Brown also ran in two events, placing tenth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:06.62 before finishing 19h in the 5,000 with a time of 16:14.86.
He was also recognized in the post-meet awards presentations as the Summit Award Winner for having the highest GPA of any men's athlete in the meet, marking the fourth time in five years that a Maverick man has won that honor.
Minutes before, the Mavs finished ninth in the 4x400-meter relay with a season-best time of 3:20.13.
Meanwhile, freshman
Austin Schultz took ninth in the shot put with a career-best throw of 15.18 meters (49-9.75) to move up a spot to fourth in CMU history.
The Maverick women also had a strong overall day, claiming two gold and two silver medals to finish fifth in the team standings.
