Higgs claims bronze in triple jump to help keep CMU in third

GOLDEN, Colo.— Antone Higgs and Salem Brunk set career-best marks to score nine combined team points in the triple jump, while Teo Casados and Aidan Brownell advanced to the finals in the 200 meters and 110-meter hurdles, respectively, highlights of Colorado Mesa University's Day 2 men's performances at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

Higgs, who took fourth in the long jump on Friday, recorded a mark of 14.67 meters (48-1.75) on his final attempt to claim the bronze medal and move up a spot to sixth in CMU history.

Brunk, who won the RMAC indoor title, recorded an outdoor career-best of 14.27 meters (46-10) on his opening attempt and hung on to sixth place.

Those efforts kept the Mavs in third place of the overall team standings with 33 points heading into Sunday's final day here at the Colorado School of Mines' Stermole Track & Field Complex.

Meanwhile, Casados safely secured passage into the 200-meter final, taking second in his heat of the preliminary round with a time of 21.29 seconds to earn the No. 4 spot in Sunday's final.

Later, Brownell advanced to the hurdling final after posting a season-best mark of 14.90 seconds in the preliminaries.  He continues to rank sixth in CMU history.

Although the Mavericks did not advance any runners to the 800-meter final, they did have two set new career-best times.

Dylan Campbell, who took 12th, recorded a time of 1:54.00 in the third preliminary heat, nearly a second quicker than his former season and career-best.  He continues to rank seventh in CMU history.  In an earlier heat, Peter Leary ran to a time of 1:54.33 and moved up to the No. 8 spot in CMU history while finishing 13th in the event.

Freshman Van Chambers also led the Mavericks in the discus throw, taking 14th with a throw of 42.81 meters (140-5).  Kaiden Major took 16th at 42.14 meters (138-3).

The Maverick women picked up 12 team points in the heptathlon and another five in the shot put to move up to fifth place through eight scored events.
