GOODYEAR, Ariz.— Senior
Cole Beyer fired a 7-under par round of 65 to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's golf team to one of its' best ever rounds and a strong second place finish at The Stack Cougar-Burro Classic, which wrapped up Tuesday here at the Golf Club of Estrella.
Beyer finished the 54-hole tournament over three days on two different courses with a final score of 11-under 211 and tied for the tournament lead with Colorado Christian's Adam Duncan but dropped a 1-hole playoff to the Cougar senior, who is ranked second in the country according to the lasted SCOREBOARD rankings. Beyer is ranked 12
th.
As a team, the Mavericks had three men in the 60's and another at 2-under par 70 en route to a Tuesday team score of 272 on the 7,139-yard, par-72 course. That 16-under par round is a new school record in relation to par, bettering the former mark of -14 and was just four shots off the program record for raw score of 268 (-12) set in the third round of the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invite in October, 2024.
Tuesday's round is the second best in program history, in terms of raw score.
The Mavs' former relation to par record of -14 was set in the opening round of the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
The Mavericks also finished with a tournament score of 867 (-3), finishing behind only the nation's top-ranked and defending national champion Colorado Christian Cougars, who had four of the top five finishers to run away with the team win at 831 (-36).
CMU came into the day in fifth place but passed Westminster, Western Washington and Fort Lewis in the final round.
The Mavs were rolling in birdies throughout the day as Beyer carded seven in his bogey free round.
Luke Wagstaff also had four birdies in a clean round of 68 enabling him to finish in a tie for 15
th in the 78-man field from 14 teams at 217 (+1).
Timmy Cavarno also broke par with a Tuesday round of 69, finishing with five birdies and just two blemishes of his scorecard of 69. He finished in a tie for 23
rd in the final standings at 221 (+5).
Dylan Everett rounded out the impressive team score, signing for a 70 on Tuesday to finish in a tie 46
th at 226 (+11). He also made five birdies and had just three bogeys.
Baptiste Laborde was also playing for the team and posted a score of 76 (+4) on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 59
th place overall at 230 (+15). He made two birdies on Tuesday.
Leo Lavalle was playing as an individual and took 74
th at 242 (+27). He also carded a 77 on Tuesday and registered four birdies in a 7-hole stretch.
The Mavs will return to Goodyear for the RJGA Palm Valley Classic on Apr. 7-8. That event will be played at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
