Mavs take home top three finish in first tournament of Arizona trip

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa University Men's Golf Team finished up the first tournament of their trip to Arizona this afternoon with the Mavericks placing in the top three at the Hot Dirt Desert Shootout at Golf Club of Estrella.

Playing in a field of 14 schools and 77 individual players the Mavs took home a second place finish as a team while having six different golfers compete with four of them finishing in the top 25.

In the team's second place finish they shot 18 under as a squad while totaling 558 strokes. They finished just one stroke better than Cal State East Bay who finished in third place at 17 under.

Leading Colorado Mesa was the pair of Cole Beyer and Timmy Cavarno who both placed in the top five. Beyer finished tied for second place in the tournament with him ending the day 10 under. He shot a seven under 65 in the first round of the day with him closing the second round out shooting three under for a 69.

Cavarno placed fifth in the tournament with him finishing just two strokes higher at eight under. Cavarno shot an opening round 66 before finishing the day with another sub par round of 70.

Beyer totaled nine birdies on his day with one eagle and only recording one bogie. Cavarno recorded 13 birdies himself to lead the team.

Turning in the other two top-25 finishes was the pair of Luke Wagstaff and Dylan Everett who each shot even in the tournament to tie for 24th place. Wagstaff totaled five birdies in his two rounds while Everret added seven birdies himself. Wagstaff shot 72's in both rounds with Everret shooting a 76 in round one before going under in round two at 68.

Leo Lavalle competed in the tournament as the team's fifth golfer shooting 11 over to finish in 67th place.

Baptiste Laborde also competed as an individual for the Mavs shooting five over to finish in 40th place. In Laborde's second round of the day he carded an albatross on the par five 13th hole to be the only Maverick with an albatross on the year.

Winning the tournament was host school #1 Colorado Christian University with a team score of 541 for 35 under. The Cougars also owned the tournament's individual winner of Adam Duncan who finished at 12 under.

Following today, the Mavs will now take part in a three-day event when they play in the Stack Cougar-Burro Classic on Sunday through Tuesday. Each day will feature one round of 18 holes with the tournament taking place at both Verrado Golf Club and The Golf Club at Estrella Mountain. Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines will serve as hosts of this event. Tee time is slated for 10:57 MDT on Sunday.
