Women's Wrestling
  • The Mavericks won the first ever RMAC Tournament team title on Saturday as they had five individual champions and nine finalists across eight of the ten weight classes to bring home the cup.
  • All 15 Mavericks that competed placed, with 12 recording first, second or third place finishes in their respective weight classes.
  • CMU had also had six individual champions at the inaugural RMAC Women's Wrestling Championships in 2024, but no official team scores were kept that year.
  • The Mavericks, ranked ninth nationally, scored 149 ½ team points this year, out-pointing No. 8 Simon Fraser (129) and the rest of the field.
  • The Mavs' individual champions were Jennesis Martinez (103), Jojo McDaniel (117), Lorianna Piestewa (124), Hania Halverson (131) and Erica Smith (145).
  • The Mavs, who are currently 13-4 in dual meets, will wrestle one more dual on Friday, traveling to Alamosa to take on Adams State in a non-conference affair.
  • The NCWWC Regionals are then on Feb. 22 in Denton, Texas.
  • The Mavs have six nationally ranked individuals in Jennesis Martinez (8th, 103 lbs.), Sophia Cornish (7th, 110), Alejandra Valdiviezo (6th, 124), Gretchen Donally (10th, 160), Alison Davis (10th, 180) and Isabeau Shalack (9th, 207).
Women's Basketball
  • The Maverick women extended their winning streak to eight and now have a full 2-game lead in the RMAC standings after winning road games at CSU Pueblo and UCCS last Thursday and Saturday.
  • Those 72-65 (CSU Pueblo) and 62-58 (UCCS) wins allowed the Mavericks to improve to 15-4 overall and to 10-2 in RMAC play.
  • The lead a log-jam of four teams in Western Colorado, CSU Pueblo, Black Hills State and Adams State, who are all tied for second at 7-4.  CMU has defeated all four of those teams.
  • UCCS is in sixth place at 7-5.
  • Olivia Reed Thyne had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Mavs in Thursday's win over CSU Pueblo.  Riley Hayes also added 16 points while Kylie Kravig added 11 points, eighr rebounds, six assists and two steals.
  • Reed Thyne then recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday afternoon's win at UCCS, which allowed the Mavs to avenge their only home loss of the season.
  • Hayes also made four 3-pointers and scored 17 points.
  • CMU, which has played four straight games on the road, will return home for two this week, taking on MSU Denver (6-14, 5-7 RMAC) on Thursday night at 5:30 and Regis (8-11, 6-6 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Men's Basketball
  • The Mavericks recorded their second straight road week split and are now 12-8 overall and 6-6 in the RMAC.
  • They claimed a 64-61 road win at CSU Pueblo on Thursday night, playing in their fifth consecutive 1-possession game.
  • CMU went 4-1 in that stretch.
  • Will Mortimore scored a career-high 19 points and added 12 rebounds in the victory over the ThunderWolves while Ty Allred scored 12 points.
  • The Mavs were then downed 71-57 at UCCS on Saturday afternoon.
  • Harvey White and Tevin Riehl scored nine points each for the Mavs against the Mountain Lions.
  • With four weeks and eight games remaining in the regular season, the Mavericks are in a tie with Chadron State for seventh place in the RMAC standings, just one game out of fifth and one game ahead of ninth place.
  • The Mavs have played four straight on the road, where they are 3-4 season, but will return home, where they are 5-2, for two challenging games this week.
  • The Mavs will take on MSU Denver (15-5, 9-3 RMAC), which is currently in third place in the RMAC standings on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. before facing second place Regis (12-8, 10-2 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Men's Wrestling
  • The Maverick men were off last week but will aim to clinch a RMAC Regular Season title this week when they hit the road for road duals at CSU Pueblo and the Colorado School of Mines this weekend.
  • CMU is a perfect 8-0 in dual meets and 4-0 in RMAC duals, right behind Mines (5-0) in the RMAC standings with three duals to go.
  • Two wins this weekend would guarantee at least a share of the RMAC title.
  • The Mavericks are currently ranked 25th  in the NWCA's NCAA Division II Rankings.
  • The Mavs have six nationally ranked individuals in Dayson Torgerson (#7, 125 lbs.), Oran Huff (#14, 133), Ryan Wheeler (#10, 157), Jason Bynarowicz (#15, 184), Gabriel Carranza (#10, 197) and Tyler Doyle (#13, 285).
Baseball
  • The Mavericks will begin their season this weekend with a 4-game set at Cal Poly Pomona this week.
  • The teams will play a single game on Thursday at 6 p.m. MST, a Friday doubleheader at 1 p.m. MST and a single game at 1 p.m. MST on Saturday at Scolinos Field in Pomona this week.
  • CMU is coming off a 38-18 season that saw them win the RMAC Regular Season & Tournament titles before falling in both of their NCAA Regional Tournament gams.
  • The Mavs will be on the road for their first three weekends and 11 games.
  • The Mavericks were picked tenth in the NCBWA Division II National Poll after being selected seventh in the D2 Baseball (diviibaseball.com) National Poll.
  • CMU was also picked to win a 13th straight RMAC title according to the conference's preseason coaches' poll
  • Cal Poly Pomona went 2-1 in a season-opening series with Westmont last week.
Diving
  • The Maverick divers were in action last week, competing at the Air Force Diving Invitational against divers from eight NCAA Division I institutions.
  • Ryan Campbell (3m) and Wyatt Hermanson (1m) both made the finals in those respective events, leading the Mavs with sixth and ninth place finishes.
  • Kenya Meyer paced the CMU women on both boards.
  • The Maverick women then took second in a 3-person team event on Friday while the men finished third.
  • The CMU Swimming & Diving teams will host the RMAC Championships, starting next Tuesday (Feb. 11) and will be gunning for their seventh straight RMAC Championship sweeps.
  • The Maverick women are currently ranked first in the CSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 Dual Meet Poll and in the Swimcloud NCAA Division II Championship rankings.  The Maverick men are second in the CSCAA poll and the Swimcloud rankings.
Softball
  • The Mavericks opened the season at last weekend's Division II First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, Texas going 2-4 against Lone Star Conference teams from the South Central Region.
  • The Mavs played two games each day from Friday-Sunday, claiming a 3-1 win over Midwestern State on Friday and a 7-2 win over St. Mary's on Sunday.
  • Two of the Mavs' four losses were to nationally-ranked opposition in No. 11 Angelo State and No. 1 and defending national champion UT-Tyler on Saturday by 6-1 and 3-0 scores.
  • Ally Distler hit .471 with two home runs to lead the Maverick bats.
  • Maverick newcomers Jessalyn Gallegos and Sophia Tassinari both collected wins in the circle for the Mavs.
  • The Mavs were picked 21st in the NFCA Division II Preseason Poll, released last week, and were picked to repeat as RMAC Champions in the conference preseason poll.
  • CMU will be off this week before beginning RMAC play next Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 15-16) with a home series against Regis.
Indoor Track & Field
  • The Mavericks split their squad at three meets around the state last weekend.
  • The largest Maverick contingent went to Boulder for running events at the Colorado Invitational, where the Mavs combined for six total NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying times and 18 new times on the program's all-time top 10 charts.
  • Brooke Miller broke her own school-record in the 800 meters (2:13.04) while Gaby Horton won the 60 meters in 7.49 seconds to lead the Maverick efforts.
  • The Mavs also had a contingent of field event and multi-event athletes at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi on Friday and Saturday.
  • Antone Higgs won the long jump while Katie Thomson took the pentathlon at that meet.
  • A small contingent also made a day trip to Gunnison for the Big Red Machine Open, where AJ Iarusso took second in the men's 60-meter hurdles while Madison Cook finished third in the women's 400 meters to lead the Mavericks.
  • The Mavs will be off this weekend before continuing their season at the Ichabod Invitational in Topeka, Kansas next weekend (Feb. 14-15).
Men's Tennis
  • The Mavericks played a split morning/evening doubleheader at Division I Idaho State to open their spring season on Saturday.
  • The Bengals won both duals 7-0 as the Mavs fell to 3-2 on the year after going 3-0 against Division II opposition in the fall.
  • William Leschig and Henry Scheck won a No. 2 doubles match in the evening dual to lead the Mavs.
  • CMU is off this weekend before heading to Arizona for three matches on Valentine's Day weekend (Feb. 14-16).
  • They will play a neutral-site match-up with Western New Mexico and then away matches against NAIA Arizona Christian and Ottawa (Ariz.).
Women's Tennis
  • The Maverick women also played a pair of weekend duals at Division I Idaho State, playing once on Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday morning to open their spring campaign.
  • The Mavericks dropped the decisions by 7-0 and 6-1 margins.
  • CMU is now 2-4 overall this season.
  • Jane Steur came from a set down to win at No. 6 singles in the Sunday morning dual while Jade Brilhante and Devyn Rodriguez dominated their No. 1 doubles, match 6-1.
  • The CMU women will also play Western New Mexico, Arizona Christian and Ottawa (Ariz.) in their next action on Feb. 14-15.

  • CMU Athletics will host a Casino Night fundraiser on Friday, Apr. 4.  More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
