Leese wins 100 Breast, helps Mavs take D-II 200 Medley Relay lead; CMU men extend team advantage

LAS VEGAS— The Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams won three of Tuesday's four relays and received a win from Antonia Leese in the women's 100-yard breaststroke on another solid night of efforts at the UNLV Finis Invitational, which continued here at the Rebels' Buchanan Natatorium and Jim Reetz Pool.

The Maverick men won both the 200 medley and 800 free relays and picked up three second place and two third place finishes in the day's five individual swimming events while extending their lead over four NCAA Division I opponents.

CMU's men now have 742 ½ team points and lead the hosts by 204 heading into the final day.  Wyoming is third with 380 points, just three ahead of Cal Baptist.  The University of Pacific stands fifth with 330.

The Maverick women maintained their third place position out of seven teams and now have 486 ½ points to trail Tulane by just 35.  UNLV leads with 663.

The Mavericks are well ahead of Wyoming (320), Cal Baptist (274), Pacific (204) and Alaska Fairbanks (30).

Leese won the 100 breast in a season-best and improved NCAA Division II Championship "B" Cut time of 1:02.17 after teaming with Taylar Hooton, Kiara Borchardt and Ada Qunell to win the 200 medley relay, the evening's first final.  The Maverick quartet combined for a time of 1:40.40, the fastest in Division II this season.

The Maverick men, who have won all four relays throughout the meet this far, finished in 1:26.51.  That quartet included Luka Samsonov, Aron Jonsson, Oskar Sawicki and Guillaume Guth.

Borchardt then took second in the women's 100 fly, posting a season-best and improved "B" cut time of 54.72 seconds.  Qunell, who broke the Mavs' oldest record last month, also made the final and took eighth in 55.90.

Meanwhile, Guth and Sawicki took second and third in the men's half of the event.  Guth finished in 47.19 seconds after posting a preliminary round time of 47.02 in the morning.  Sawicki finished the final in 47.41 after posting a time of 47.24 in the morning.  Freshman Micah Moore also qualified for the "A" final in 48.82 and finished eighth in the finals with a time of 49.01.

The Maverick women then scored 42 points in the 400 IM as Olivia Hansson (4:28.91), Haven Hinkle (4:29.28) and Tori Bartusiak (4:32.31) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The CMU men did even better qualifying four men for the final, a group led by Samsonov who took second in 3:55.41.  Sophomore Miles Moran finished second in 3:57.43, a new career-best and improved NCAA "B" Cut time.  Gavyn Tatge finished sixth in 4:00.83 while Aron Jonsson finished seventh in 4:01.35 after recording a time of 3:57.71 in the morning.

Notably, Ethan Gluck also won the consolation final in 4:01.96.

Hanna Sasivarevic then finished sixth in the women's 200 free, touching in 1:50.64 while Qunell was just behind in 1:50.65.

Jonas Friess led the Maverick men in that event, placing fourth in 1:38.17 while Conrad Fawcett (1:40.78) and Braden Felio (1:41.69) were also in the final, placing seventh and eighth, respectively.

After Leese won the women's 100 breast as the lone Maverick representative in the two scoring heat, the Maverick men had two of the top four finishers as Jonsson finished second in 53.89 seconds while Marcos Otero was fourth in 54.59.

Hooton then claimed a third place finish in the 100 Backstroke (55.18) while Anna Beck finished eighth (59.63) after going much quicker (56.65) in the morning.

In the men's half of the event, Samsonov took third in 48.41 seconds after Richard Schmiedefeld had won the consolation final in 49.30.

Qunell, Hansson, Sasivarevic and Kendyll Wilkinson then took third in the women's 800 free relay with a time of 7:28.85, highlighted by Sasivarevic's 1:50.23 third leg split.

The Maverick men then dominated the relay in 6:30.58, winning by more than 7 ½ second over UNLV.  Guth turned in an opening-leg split of 1:34.69 while Schmiedefeld, Friess and Fawcett brought the Mavs home.

Earlier in the afternoon, the diving preliminaries and consolation finals were contested leading into Wednesday's championship finals in the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter.
