ALAMOSA, Colo.— After winning ten events in the first of two weekend meets on Friday evening, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks did one better on Saturday claiming 11 event wins in another solid day of indoor track & field action in the ASU Qualifier #2 here at Adams State University's High Altitude Training Center.
The Mavericks also added another new program top-10 mark in the women's mile at the Nevada Invitational & Multis, in Reno, Nevada where a small group of Maverick distances runners spent the weekend.
At Adams State, the Maverick men won six different events while the CMU women won five of the seven events that they competed in as
Augustine Hancock claimed her second and third wins of the weekend, sweeping Saturday's throwing events.
Katie Thomson also claimed her third win of the weekend in the 60-meter hurdles while
Gaby Horton (60m) and
Kendra Ritzmann (triple jump) added victories.
Hancock took the shot put with a mark of 11.51 meters (37-9.25) while redshirt sophomore teammate
Aaliyah Bos took second at 10.97 meters (36-0). Hancock and Bos also went 1-2 in the weight throw with Hancock claiming the victory at 15.68 meters (51-5.5), while Bos was second at 13.94 meters (45-9).
Jaylynn Morgan also finished fourth in the weight throw with a heave of 11.40 meters (37-5).
Thomson, who had defeated Hancock in the shot put on Friday, focused her efforts on the track on Saturdays, winning the 60-meter hurdles in a season-best 9.28 seconds before running the 400 meters for the first time in her collegiate career, posting a time of 1:03.65.
Meanwhile, Horton won the 60 meters in 7.54 seconds after qualifying first out of the preliminaries in 7.56 seconds. She had won the 200 on Friday and broke CMU's 5-year old school-record in the 60 last month starting her junior season in fine form.
Ritzmann, a freshman, claimed her first collegiate triple jump victory with an effort of 10.98 meters (36-0.25) while teammate
Lily Nieslanik took second just ten centimeters back at 10.88 meters (35-8.5).
The CMU men were just as successful as
Marik Cummings took the 60 meters for the second straight day in 6.85 seconds, just a hundredth off his personal-best of 6.84, after qualifying in 6.86 seconds while
Trevor Kendall took the 60-meter hurdles in 8.48 seconds exacting revenge on his teammate
Aidan Brownell, who finished second in 8.54 after winning Friday's event.
The Mavs also ran by themselves in the distance medley relay, as the quartet of
Ryan O'Loughlin,
Peter Leary,
Jayden Thulson and
Jacob Dalrymple posted a time of 11:15.63.
Meanwhile in the field events,
Garrett Searls cleared 4.45 meters (14-7.25) as the only man in the pole vault, his best effort in nearly two years.
Meanwhile,
Antone Higgs led a 1-2-3 effort in the triple jump with a mark of 14.61 meters (47-11.25). CMU's
Salem Brunk (14.10m/46-3.25) and
Kelsey Montague (13.27m/43-6.5) were the other two competitors as Montague contested that discipline for the first time since the 2002 outdoor season.
Freshman
Van Chambers won the weight throw for the second straight day with an effort of 15.36 meters (50-4.75) while fellow freshman
Kaiden Major was second at 13.86 meters (45-5.75). Major also finished third in the shot put while Chambers finished fourth.
Nevada Invitational & Multis
After setting five new program top-10 marks on Friday, the Maverick distance runners continued to fare well in the top sections of the mile, which were contested Saturday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
Brooke Miller moved into the No. 3 spot of CMU women's top 10 history with a fifth place time of 5:08.22, which converts to 5:02.52 at sea-level. Miller had won the 800 on Friday.
Meanwhile, teammate
Megan Hodges finished 11
th in 5:24.93.
On the men's side,
Kevin DeGree took tenth with a time of 4:27.96, less than a second off his No. 8 program position of 4:27.19.
Next Week
The Mavericks will be in action against next weekend splitting their squad between meets at the University of Colorado, the Colorado School of Mines and Western Colorado.
