USAFA, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University standout
Agata Naskret won the women's 100-yard backstroke as the Maverick swimming & diving squad combined for three second place relay finishes and six other third place finishes during the first day of a 3-team invitational-style meet against Division I host Air Force and Big 12 Conference foe BYU on Friday evening here at the Cadet Natatorium.
The Maverick women are in second place in the team standings with 283 points, 20 clear of BYU. The host Falcons have more than a 100-point lead with 385.
On the men's side, the BYU Cougars are leading the meet by 40 points with 354 while Air Force is in second with 314, ahead of CMU's point total of 266.
Naskret, the reigning NCAA Division II National Champion and all-time divisional record holder, claimed her 100 Back win in 54.61 seconds after helping the Maverick women take second in the 200 medley relay at the start of the night. She teamed with
Antonia Leese,
Kiara Borchardt and
Elli Williams for a time of 1:41.65 in that event.
The Maverick men also took second in the opening relay as
Andrew Scoggin,
Forrest Frazier,
Dejan Urbanek and
Harry Stacey posted a time of 1:28.76.
After a short intermission,
Olivia Hansson posted a solid third place time of 4:32.97 in the 400 individual medley, which with the 7-second Tier III altitude adjustment that adds another NCAA Championship "B" cut option to the Swedish junior's national championship event list. Hansson was competing in that discipline for the first time in her collegiate career and now ranks ninth in CMU history with her converted time of 4:25.97.
CMU All-American
Sophia Bains, competing just outside of her hometown of Colorado Springs, also took fifth in the event, touching the wall in 4:35.07.
Leese later claimed a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke, touching in a career-best and improved NCAA "B" cut time of 1:02.46 (1:02.31-altitude adjusted) while moving up two spots to third on the Mavs' all-time performers' chart and into the top 10 on the national performance list this season. The sophomore also now leads this season's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference list.
The Mavs also received a third place effort of 54.99 seconds from Frazier in the men's half of the event while
Katerina Matoskova backed up Naskret's win in the 100 Back with a third place time of 56.82 seconds.
Kate Leary also fared well in that tight event, taking fifth in 56.86 seconds.
The Mavs later claimed third place finishes in both 1650 freestyle races as
Hanna Sasivarevic posted a time of 17:50.52 to lead the Maverick women before
Jacob Troescher paced the CMU men in 16:12.51.
The Mavs also ended the session in strong form, taking second in the men's 400 free relay after the women took third. Stacey, Scoggin,
Richard Schmiedefeld and
Kuba Kiszczak combined for a men's time of 2:58.74 as three of the four recorded sub 45-second splits.
Naskret, Williams,
Kendyll Wilkinson and
Ada Qunell had finished the women's race in 3:25.62 while the "B" unit of
Reagan Horn, Hansson, Matoskova and
Amber Siverts placed fourth and best amongst the secondary squads in 3:27.74.
In diving,
Wyatt Hermanson placed fourth in the men's 3-meter event with a score of 286.95 pints while Mav teammates
Ryan Campbell (284.30) and
David Roethlisberger (284.00) were just behind.
Jenna Hurley placed fourth in the women's 1-meter competition, scoring 236.15 points in her six dives. CMU teammate
Kenya Meyer was fifth with 229.20 points.
The meet will resume on Saturday at 11 a.m. and will be streamed on the
Falcons' YouTube channel.
