Mavs sweep ThunderWolves in home weekend opener

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's two seniors came from a set down to claim victories while the Mavs' underclassmen were dominant victors as the Maverick women's tennis team completed yet another season sweep over the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves with a dominant 7-0 Friday victory at the Elliott Tennis Center.

The Mavericks, 11-13 overall, have now recorded three 7-0 wins over the ThunderWolves (0-13) this season and have now defeated them 42 straight times since 2007.  The last 11 of those wins have all been by 7-0 margins, a streak that started nearly five years ago on Apr. 19, 2019.

CMU had also won 7-0 just six days earlier in Pueblo and had won a by the same scoreline in a home match at the end of the fall season on Sept. 30.

Issy Coman and Julianna Campos, who will be recognized during Senior Day festivities on Saturday, completed Friday's sweep with their victories after Makenna Livingston, Devyn Rodriguez, Kristen Thomas and Delia Maier conceded just 13 combined games in their straight-set victories.

The Mavs also dominated doubles play, allowing just four combined games in the three flights.

Coman and Makenna Livingston completed the sweep with a 6-1 win over Margot Aebischer and Mariangel Nunez at No. 1 after Rodriguez and Campos started the doubles wins with a 6-1 win in the second flight.  Maier and Thomas were also 6-2 winners on Court 3.

In singles, Thomas defeated Malaya Pendon, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 before Maier was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Sonrisa Bustamante at No. 6 singles.

Livingston then clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Valentina Brienza at No. 2 singles before Rodriguez finished off Nunen, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

Meanwhile, Campos dropped the first set against Marta Garcia at No. 4, by a 6-4 margin, but came back to win the second set, 6-1 before winning the match tie-breaker, 10-6.

Coman also lost a 6-4 decision to Aebsicher in the first set of the top flight match but won the second set, 6-3.  The Auckland, New Zealand native then rattled off eight straight points after falling behind 2-0 in the tie-breaker while cruising to a 10-3 win.

Maverick sophomore Jane Steur also won an exhibition singles match over Yelena Travica by a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline.

The Mavericks will continue their home weekend on Saturday with two duals, their last of the regular season.  They will take on Division III Colorado College at 9 a.m. before hosting MSU Denver in an all-Pacific West Conference encounter at 2 p.m.  The Mavs will recognize Campos and Coman along with men's seniors Jorge Abreu and Brandon Keller in between matches at approximately 12:30 p.m., a change from earlier announced plans of 8 a.m. ceremonies.

Coman will need just one doubles victory in those duals or next week's PacWest Tournament to reach the 50 mark for her career.
