GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's tennis split a pair of home duals Saturday in their final preparation prior to the Pacific West Conference Tennis Championships next weekend. The Mavericks defeated Colorado College 5-2 before falling to MSU Denver, 4-3.
Julianna Campos,
Kristen Thomas and
Delia Maier all went 3-1 on the day for CMU, including wins in both singles matches against both the Tigers and Roadrunners. Campos was also one of two Maverick women's tennis seniors honored on Senior Day between the two duals, alongside
Issy Coman.
With the win and the loss, the Maverick women are now 12-14 on the season, falling to 0-2 against MSU Denver this season and beating Colorado College for the 17
th consecutive dual.
Against CC, the Mavericks cruised to a doubles point victory with CMU's No. 1 duo of
Issy Coman and
Makenna Livingston and No. 2 duo of
Devyn Rodriguez and
Julianna Campos each winning 6-1 while
Kristen Thomas and
Delia Maier won 6-2 on court three.
The Mavs quickly got the three wins needed to clinch the dual once singles play commenced. Thomas was the first singles match to finish on court five, defeating CC's Gigi Jensen 6-0, 6-3. Campos earned a three-set win on court four, beating Lindsay Popeo 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8). Rodriguez followed by defeating Christina Heffron 6-4, 6-4 to get the win on court three.
Colorado College fought back in the dual with a pair of wins on the top two singles courts. CC No. 1 Kala Komanduri defeated CMU's
Issy Coman 7-5, 6-3 while on court two, Avery Hickman knocked off CMU's
Makenna Livingston 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3). In the final singles match to be played,
Delia Maier earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over CC's Elizabeth Girian to cement the 5-2 victory for the Mavericks.
The script got flipped in doubles against MSU Denver, with all three Maverick duos falling short.
Issy Coman and
Makenna Livingston lost 6-3 on court one,
Devyn Rodriguez and
Julianna Campos lost 6-3 on court two while
Kristen Thomas and
Delia Maier kept it a little closer, dropping a 6-4 set on court three.
MSU Denver handled the higher courts in singles, taking a 4-0 lead in the dual to clinch before CMU battled back with later wins on courts four, five and six. MSU Denver's Hanna Haber became the first singles winner of the dual, defeating CMU's
Makenna Livingston 6-2, 6-2 on court two. Roadrunner standout Emily Hafner, the No. 2 ranked player in the region and the No. 28 ranked player in the nation, got a court one win soon after, beating
Issy Coman 6-4, 7-5.
Lilly Steinemeier clinched the dual for MSU Denver with a come-from-behind win on court three against
Devyn Rodriguez. While Rodriguez won the first set, Steinemeier stormed back for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory that gave the Roadrunners an insurmountable 4-0 lead in the dual.
With the outcome clinched, the two teams played out the remaining matches but went to a 10-point tiebreak for the third set rather than full sets. The Mavericks prevailed in two third-set tiebreakers on courts four and five.
On four,
Julianna Campos earned a narrow win over Kambra Roles by a 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 1-0 (13-11) score to put the Mavericks on the board.
Kristen Thomas also came from a set down to win in a tiebreak over MSU Denver's Courtenay Leonard, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Once again,
Delia Maier closed the dual on a positive note for CMU, defeating Monica Guarin 7-5, 7-5 on court six.
Next up for CMU is the PacWest conference tournament, starting this Wednesday in Surprise, Arizona. The Mavericks, currently seeded No. 12 in a 12-team field, are assured of a spot but will learn in the coming days whether or not they move up in seeding as well as their first-round opponent.
