GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Makenna Livingston went 2-0 while the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks swept the doubles matches, highlights of an otherwise difficult day that saw the visiting Stanislaus State Warriors win each of the final five singles matches to record a 5-2 team win in the battle between Pacific West Conference foes on Monday afternoon at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The Warriors won all three of the final three singles matches in three sets completing the come-from-behind victory after CMU had jumped out to a 2-0 team lead thanks to the doubles sweep and Livingston's 6-4, 6-1 win over Alyssa Tay at No. 2 singles.
The visitors then won at No. 5 and 4 singles to level the score before coming from a set down in both the No. 1 and. 3 singles matches to clinch the dual, moments before finishing it off with another 3-set win at No. 6 singles.
In the process, the Warriors improved to 3-10 overall and likely ahead of the Mavs (9-12) in this week's PacWest rankings, due to be out on Wednesday afternoon. The Mavericks were ranked 11
th, one sport ahead of the Warriors, last week.
The Mavericks were dominant in doubles as Livingston and
Issy Coman posted a 7-5 win over Zuzanna Dziewiecka and Annabelle Mulick in the top flight to complete the doubles sweep.
Earlier,
Delia Maier and
Kristen Thomas won 6-1 over Nicollet Alexander and Abbigail Mulick at No. 3 doubles while
Julianna Campos and
Devyn Rodriguez won by a 6-2 score at No. 2 over Tay and Emma Yu.
Livingston then won in singles to put the Mavs up 2-0 before Yu won 6-3, 6-3 over Thomas at No. 5 before Alexander finished off Campos, 6-2, 6-2 to level the dual.
Meanwhile, Dziewiecka bounced back from first-set tiebreaker loss to defeat Coman, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Annabelle Mulick had a similar 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2 win over Rodriguez at No. 3 to clinch the dual.
Seconds later, her sister Abbigail was able to claim a narrow 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Maier at No. 6.
The Mavericks did also win a pair of singles exhibition sets as
Jane Steur and
Audrey O'Rear both defeated the Warriors' Jaedyn Hendrix by a 6-2 margin.
Both teams will next head to Colorado's front range where they will face MSU Denver and CSU Pueblo.
CMU will play at MSU Denver on Friday at 2:30 p.m. before taking on the ThunderWolves on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. The Warriors will play in Denver on Wednesday and Pueblo in Thursday as they continue their spring break swing through Colorado.
