Mavs fall at MSU Denver

Campos, Meier record singles wins

DENVER— Julianna Campos and Delia Maier both recorded singles wins but were not enough for the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks who dropped a 5-2 road decision to long-time rival MSU Denver on Friday here at the Roadrunners' Assembly Athletic Complex.

MSU Denver improved to 8-11 with the win while the Mavs dropped their fourth straight decision to fall to 9-13.

Friday's dual was tight and featured four 3-set singles matches.  The Roadrunners pulled out three of those after recording 6-2 and 6-3 doubles wins in the second and third flights.  The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished.

Meanwhile in singles, Campos came from a set down to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Kambra Roles at No. 4 singles while Maier was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Monica Guarin at No. 6 for the Mavs.

Elsewhere, the Roadrunners' nationally-ranked (No. 28) Emily Hafner was able to overcome CMU's Issy Coman, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) in a top flight thriller while Lilly Stienemeier was a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4 win over Devyn Rodriguez in the third flight.

Courtenay Leonard was also a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5) winner over CMU's Kristen Thomas in the No. 5 singles match while Hanna Haber defeated Maverick junior Makenna Livingston, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

UPDATE: The Mavericks will play their final road match of the season on Saturday morning at winless CSU Pueblo before hosting the ThunderWolves next Friday (Apr. 12).  They will also wrap up the regular season with Saturday, Apr. 13 matches against Colorado College and MSU Denver.

Saturday's match was originally scheduled for Sunday but has been moved up and moved inside the Pueblo Tennis Center due to high wind forecasts.  First serves are slated for 8:30 a.m.
