WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Midwestern State Invitational on Monday (Mar. 25) afternoon at Wichita Falls Country Club that is set at a par-71, 6,882 yards.
The field features 17 teams from NCAA Division II and from the NJCAA ranks and has 92 golfers competing in this year's event.
After 36 complete holes, the Mavericks sit second place after a 17-over, 585 just four strokes behind the leader Odessa College. In their first round, they shot an even-par, 284 and led the tournament before a 17-over, 301 occurred in the second set of 18-holes.
The Mavericks lead third place Texas Permian Basin by eight strokes and host Midwestern State by a full 10 strokes.
Timmy Cavarno has had a solid showing this week as he is currently in a tie for sixth place on the individual leaderboard after a 2-over, 144 in the two rounds. Cavarno was sensational in his first round after posting an even par through 11 holes, he closed with three birdies in his final four holes of the round for a 3-under, 68.
He second round was a bit more difficult as he finished with a 5-over, 76. He opened with back-to-back bogeys but followed with back-to-back birdies before a bogey and a triple on No. 18. He was sitting at 7-over before he sank a pair of birdies to close the round.
Senior
Pablo Diaz is three strokes behind his teammate in a tie for 10
th place on the leaderboard. Diaz' best round was his second where he shot a 2-over, 73.
Cole Beyer (+6) and
Dylan Everett (+7) round out the Maverick scorers.
Odessa College's Adam Bresnu leads the tournament with a 2-under, 140.
The final round is set to tee-off tomorrow morning.
