SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team won for the second time in three days, sweeping the doubles point before winning three hard-fought 3-set singles matches in a 6-1 team victory over the Westmont College Warriors on Wednesday afternoon at the Warriors' Lynn Abbott Tennis Courts.
The Mavs improved to 9-9 on the season and to 2-3 against Pacific West Conference foes as five different Maverick players went 2-0.
Westmont, new members of the PacWest who are transitioning from the NAIA to NCAA Division II ranks, is now 1-13 this season.
Issy Coman,
Devyn Rodriguez and
Kristen Thomas all went 2-0 and pulled out 6-4 third-set decision in their No. 2, 3 and 4 singles matches as Coman delivered the dual-clinching point with her 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Olivia Madarang.
Meanwhile, No. 5
Julianna Campos and No. 6
Delia Maier had more straight-forward victories in straight sets.
The Mavs were impressive in doubles as Coman and
Makenna Livingston were 6-2 winners over Francesca Aguirre and Madarang in the top flight. Rodriguez, Campos and Thomas and Maier were then both 6-3 winners in the other two flights.
The Warriors would win the first completed singles match as Aguirre defeated Livingston, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a top-flight slugfest. However, Thomas was able to come from behind in a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Sabina Salva as the Mavericks took control of the dual.
CMU was then able to win the other four singles matches as Maier got by Liska Knight, by a convincing 6-o, 6-3 margin before Coman's victory clinched the victory.
Rodriguez then finished off Sophia Ostovany, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a hard-fought No 3 singles match before Campos was able to take down Justie Spitzer by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) scoreline.
Jane Steur also won a 8-6 exhibition singles set for the Mavericks after she and
Audrey O'Rear were defeated in a exhibition doubles affair, 6-1.
The Maverick wen were also 5-2 victors over the Warriors as they snapped a 6-match slide while picking up their first PacWest win of the season.
Both Maverick teams will head to Fresno for a pair of Thursday matches. They will both play at Fresno Pacific while the CMU women will then wrap up the spring break trip with a neutral site match-up against Dominican.
