FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks dropped a pair of 4-0 decisions to fellow Pacific West Conference foes here at the Haak Tennis Complex falling to the host Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds before dropping another neutral-court decision to the Dominican University of California Penguins.
Both duals were played to clinch.
CMU fell to 9-11 with the losses and went 2-3 on their 4-day Spring Break week swing through California.
The Sunbirds are now 4-11 while the Penguins won their fourth straight match to improve to 9-4.
The Mavs battled in doubles but were left behind in the singles play during doubles play.
Against the Sunbirds,
Delia Maier and
Kristen Thomas defeated Daimy Paula and Halle Faherty, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles before the Sunbirds won the other two flights. They then won at No. 1, 3 and 4 singles.
Maverick junior
Makenna Livingston did win the first set of her No. 2 singles match against Audrey Ouellet by a 6-3 score but was trailing 4-2 in the second set when the match was called off. The No. 5 and 6 singles matches did not even begin.
Against Dominican,
Devyn Rodriguez and
Julianna Campos were headed to tie-breaker at No. 2 doubles when that tilt was left unfinished when the Penguins won at No. 1 and 3 doubles.
In singles, the Penguins won at No. 4, 3 and 2 singles while
Delia Maier was up a set for the Mavs in the sixth flight, cruising over Zoe Coggins, 6-0 in the first. Campos was also level with Astrid Craig at 5-5 in the first set of the No. 5 singles encounter while
Issy Coman was level with Audrey Rafols in the first set at 4-all after Rafols had won the opening set, 7-5.
The Mavericks, who have been to Idaho, Nebraska, Arizona, Utah and California twice this spring, will finally be able to play a home match, their first of the spring, on Monday, Apr. 1 when they host Stanislaus State at the Elliott Tennis Center in Grand Junction.
