AZUSA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's team the early doubles point but could not continue the momentum in singles as the University of Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans fired back to sweep the singles matches in straight sets to win a neutral-site dual between Pacific West Conference rivals by a 6-1 margin on Tuesday here on Azusa Pacific University's campus.
The Mavericks were trying to go 2-for-2 at the start of the trip to California
after winning 5-1 at Cal State LA on Monday evening and looked to be in the driver's seat as
Kristen Thomas and
Delia Maier pulled out a 7-5 win over Julia Braden and Lehua Jordan in the third doubles match.
Maverick veterans
Makenna Livingston and
Issy Coman had also won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-4 over Nanami Okakmoto and Akari Ichikawa while Hilo was victorious by the same 6-4 margin at No. 2 doubles.
However, the Vulcans were able to win all six singles matches, completing the sweep with a tight 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory from Hana Hofmanova over Meier at No. 6.
The Mavs are now 8-9 on the season while the Vulcans improved to 6-3.
CMU will continue their swing through the Golden State on Wednesday playing in Santa Barbara against PacWest newcomer Westmont, which is transitioning to the NCAA Division II ranks.
