LOS ANGELES— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team picked up a key road win, beating Cal State LA by a 5-1 margin on Monday evening here at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. The victory was the Mavs' first in three tries against fellow Pacific West Conference foes this season and improved the Mavs' overall record to 8-8. It also allowed them to get an important 5-match, 4-day Spring Break swing through California on a winning note.
The Golden Eagles fell to 1-9.
The Mavericks won the doubles point in thrilling fashion and took four of the five completed singles matches as southern California native
Makenna Livingston,
Issy Coman and
Delia Maier all went 2-0 throughout the match, which included a lengthy rain delay during the singles wave.
In doubles play, Livingston and Coman dominated the Golden Eagles' top pair Hideka Takamura and Sarah Olmos, 6-1. Cal State LA then answered back with a win at No. 2 doubles before Maier and
Kristen Thomas were able to pull out a 6-4 win over Courtlyn Lam and Rochelle Suarez in the third flight to give CMU the early overall advantage.
In singles, Livingston cruised past Takamura, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 before the Golden Eagles recorded their first team point with a No. 4 singles win over Thomas.
However, Coman, ranked 19
th in the ITA's NCAA Division II West Region rankings at the end of the fall, outlasted the seventh-ranked Olmos, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
CMU freshman
Devyn Rodriguez also picked up a 3-set (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) win over Alexandra Hincu at No. 3 while Maier closed out the dual with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rochelle Saurez in the fifth flight.
Rodriguez's win was her tenth team dual win of the season and raised her record to 14-8 overall, including individual style tournaments.
Maverick senior
Julianna Campos was also on the verge of winning her No. 6 singles match, leading Lam by a 6-4, 5-3 margin when it was left unfinished.
The Mavs will remain in the greater Los Angeles area on Tuesday, facing the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans in a neutral-site match-up in Azusa. First serves at Azusa Pacific University's Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex are slated for 9 a.m. PDT (10 a.m. Mountain).
