GENEVA, Ohio— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks will have four individual swimmers in the championship finals and three others for the consolation finals for Wednesday night's session after some strong swims during the morning preliminary session, which included heats in the 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and the slower seeded sections of the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Top-seeded and defending NCAA Division II Champion
Ben Sampson posted the fastest preliminary round time in the men's 200 IM, finishing his preliminary heat in 1:44.11, more than a second quicker than Drury's David Mourao (1:45.12).
The Mavs will also have two women gunning for team points in that event as
Benedict Nagy qualified fifth to reach the championship final in 2:01.00 while
Sophia Bains finished 15
th in the preliminaries with a time of 2:03.15 to earn a lane in the consolation final.
The Mavericks women also fared well in the 50 free as
Elli Williams finished seventh in the preliminaries with a time of 23.12 seconds while
Lauren White won her heat in a personal-best 23.26 seconds to qualify for the consolation final as the tenth overall finisher, despite coming into the event seeded 33
rd.
Agata Naskret also placed 14
th in 23.30 to earn a spot in the consolation final. White is now ranked second behind Williams, who had a PB of 23.09 coming in, on the Mavs' all-time top performers chart.
Olivia Hansson will also be involved in the championship finals in the 1,000 free as the No. 6 seed at 10:01.22. The eight fastest seeds will swim at the beginning of the final session while the others competed at the end of the morning preliminary session.
In those heats,
Sydnee O'Neil finished in 10:27.99 and is currently in 29
th place.
Jacob Troescher is in 15
th place in the men's 1,000 free after finishing in 9:22.02 while
Gavin Anderson is currently in 20
th place after recording a time of 9:25.36.
The Mavs also had five men in the 200 IM as
Kuba Kiszczak (1:48.21),
Marcos Otero (1:49.88),
Max Ayres (1:50.50) and
Luka Samsonov (1:50.66) finished 22
nd, 36
th, 39
th and 40
th, respectively, behind Sampson. Samsonov improved upon his seed time of 1:50.78 in his first NCAA championship swim. Otero and Ayres, both of whom are freshman, were also in the NCAA Championship water for the first time in a competitive race.
Jameson McEnaney also finished 28
th in the men's 50 free with a time of 20.13 seconds, just off his personal-best and seed time of 20.10.
Ada Qunell finished 38
th in the women's 50 free with a time of 23.84 seconds.
The Mavs also have two divers in the men's 1-meter preliminaries, which begin at 1 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. Mountain). The consolation final of that event will be held right after the prelims while the finals will be conducted during the finals session, right before the 200 medley relays, that the Mavericks are seeded first (women's) and fifth (men's) in.
The finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. Mountain).
