GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's basketball placed three players on the RMAC Academic All-Conference First Team, more than any other institution.
Trevor Baskin,
Levi Dombro and
Reece Johnson all received spots on the 10-person honoree list, marking the second consecutive selection for all three. Colorado School of Mines guard Sam Beskind was named the RMAC Academic Player of the Year.
In addition, four other Mavericks made the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll –
Isaac Jessup (second honor roll selection),
Michael McCurry (second selection),
JP Shiers (first selection) and
Austin Thyne (first selection).
Baskin adds another academic accolade to a season that saw him claim RMAC Player of the Year honors last week. A business administration and finance double major, Baskin currently has a 3.66 GPA ahead of his scheduled graduation this spring. On the court, Baskin averages 17.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, leading the team and ranking top-four in the RMAC in all three categories.
Dombro earns his second straight All-Academic First Team honor just days after clinching his third straight
RMAC Summit Award. Dombro has a perfect 4.0 GPA through 120 academic credits while studying both environmental and political science. The fourth-year junior has played in 16 games this season and recently tallied two rebounds and an assist in the RMAC Tournament semifinal against Black Hills State.
Johnson also earns a spot on the All-Academic team once again. The Windsor, Colorado native sports a 3.95 GPA as an exercise science major and has plans to attend medical school after graduation. Johnson has played in 30 of 31 games for the Mavericks this season, averaging nearly 20 minutes per game despite only making six starts. He is averaging 4.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
Seven different schools were represented on the All-Academic First Team, with only CMU (three) and Chadron State (two) garnering multiple selections.
Isaac Jessup earns his second straight honor roll selection with a 3.67 GPA as an animation, film, photography and motion design major. Jessup, who recently earned a Second-Team All-RMAC selection, ranks fourth on the team with 9.7 points per game and ranks third in the RMAC with 192 three-point attempts.
Michael McCurry also makes the honor roll for the second straight year. McCurry has a 3.65 GPA as a business administration major while appearing in 25 games with two starts for the Mavericks. McCurry is shooting 51 percent from the field, 36 percent from three and 87 percent from the free-throw line this season.
JP Shiers earns his first career academic honor as a redshirt freshman. Shiers has a 3.32 GPA as a business administration major and appeared in six games for the Mavs this year.
Austin Thyne is another first-time All-Academic honoree. The redshirt freshman has a 4.0 GPA as an elementary education major. Thyne saw action in nine games for CMU this season, shooting 4-for-9 from the field.
