GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa head men's basketball coach
Mike Dunlap announced the signing of Pima Community College sophomore Cohenj Gonzales on Tuesday (May 13) afternoon. He will be a junior on the 2025-26 Maverick roster.
Gonzales, a 5-9 guard from Gilbert, Ariz., averaged 18.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists during his sophomore season. He shot 46.4 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three and 84.4 percent from the free-throw line. He earned NJCAA Division II First Team All-American honors and was the ACCAC Division II Player of the Year.
During his time at Pima, Gonzales also collected First Team All-ACCAC honors twice, All-Region honors twice, and was the 2023-24 ACCAC Freshman of the Year. He scored over 1,000 points in his two seasons, was named the Jack Cristiano best small man award winner, and was named to the NJCAA Division II All-Tournament team.
"Cohenj is a difference maker, his achievements speak for themselves, winning wherever he has played," Dunlap said. "However, what really stands out is his work ethic and humility. Finally, Cohenj has an 'it factor' to his game be it passing, shooting, stealing a well-intended pass or attacking the rim."
He scored a season-high 36 points in a win over Glendale Community College and finished the season with double digits in 30 of his 32 games played. He recorded nine assists and nine steals against Ascending Prep School and had a 12 rebound effort in a win over Chandler Gilbert.
Gonzales led the Aztecs to a 35-1 overall record and a perfect 18-0 in the ACCAC Division 2 schedule. The lone loss of the season came in the NJCAA Division II Championship semifinals to national runner-up Parkland. Pima wound up placing third at the tournament with a 103-88 win over Kalamazoo Valley in the third-place game.
Cohenj joins previous commits Clayton Jewell, Ben Henderson, and Yanis Mahoundo in this year's recruiting class.
