LA MIRADA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University men's and women's tennis teams came up short on Friday, falling to Pacific West Conference rival Biola University at the Biola Tennis Center.
The Eagle men won the dual 6-1 while their women were 7-0 winners over the Mavericks.
The Biola men have now won three straight duals in as many days and improved to 6-2 while the Maverick men fell to 5-7 while dropping both matches on their first of two trips to California this spring.
The CMU women also dropped both matches of the trip after falling to Azusa Pacific on Thursday and slipped back to .500 overall at 7-7. The Eagle women are now 6-3 overall and have also won three matches in as many days.
The Mavericks' lone team point was delivered by
Emil Hultman, who won his No. 5 singles match over Thiago Canessa by a 7-5, 7-5 score. Hultman also partnered with
Philemon Jabin for a 6-4 No. 2 doubles win over Canessa and Callen Hein. However, the Eagles won the other two doubles matches by 6-4 margins to take the opening point and momentum heading into the singles session.
They were victorious in five of the singles matches, taking five in straight sets.
CMU's
Henry Scheck was also able to win a set in his No. 4 singles match, but was beaten by Biola's Alejandro Flores Monteverde, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 in a back-and-forth affair.
The women's dual also featured some tight matches although the Eagles were able to pull out three set tiebreakers and 3-set matches at both No. 1 and 2 singles.
Colbeyshae Emery came from behind to win her nearly 2-hour long No. 1 singles match over CMU's
Issy Coman, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 while Lilly McNeill pulled out first and third-set tiebreakers in a 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) win over CMU's
Makenna Livingston that lasted for 2 ½ hours.
The Eagles also won the other four singles matches in straight sets after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by 6-1 and 6-0 margins, respectively. Coman and Livingston's No. 1 doubles match against Alex Mann and Brooke Fager, the nation's 11th-ranked doubles duo, was left unfinished with Mann and Fager leading 3-2.
The Maverick women will return to action in eight days when they play at Division I Utah Tech on Saturday, Mar. 9 in St. George, Utah. The CMU men will next play on Sunday, Mar. 10 when they host Division II 25
th-ranked and PacWest rival Hawai'i Hilo in a home doubleheader at the Elliott Tennis Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. Those will CMU's first two home men's matches of the season and are slated for 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
