Divers take advantage of last chance to secure NCAA trip

Hrncir sets Maverick 3-meter diving record, Hurley breaks 1-meter record

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Ally Hrncir set a school-record as she and fellow Colorado Mesa University divers Mimi Licht and Dawson Wilson all secured a trip to the NCAA Division II Pre-Championship Qualification Meet on Mar. 12 in Geneva, Ohio with strong performances at the CMU Last Chance Meet on Saturday at the El Pomar Natatorium.

Hrncir, a freshman, scored 302.00 points over six dives off the 3-meter board and surpassed the NCAA qualification standards on both boards during the competition.  Her 3-meter total bettered Kelsey Vreeman's former 6-dive record of 300.10 points that had been set in 2017.

The Alaskan also scored 300.65 points on the 1-meter board, which had given her a second qualification score from a second different meet, thus booking her trip to Ohio.

Licht, a sophomore from New Fairfield, Connecticut, also earned her first national trip, scoring 292.10 points on the 1-meter before tallying 273.95 on the 3-meter, easily going over the qualifying standards of 255 and 265 points, respectively.  Hrncir and Licht will now join Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions Jenna Hurley and Kenya Meyer on the national team.

Hurley also set a new 6-dive Maverick record on the 1-meter board, scoring 310.25 points.  She and Hrncir (300.65) surpassed Meyer's Feb. 18, 2023 last chance meet score of 297.85 points.  Meyer scored 296.50 points on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Wilson won the men's 1-meter competition with 336.55 points after tallying 336.95 points on the 3-meter and will join Isaiah Cheeks, Jax Juarros and David Roethlisberger at the national qualifier.  Wilson, a sophomore from Dickinson, North Dakota, was a CSCAA All-American in both diving events and the RMAC Men's Swimming & Diving Freshman of the Year last year.

The Maverick swimmers were also represented in 20 of the day's 21 events in search of new or improved times to move up or on to the national qualification lists.

Nine different Mavs went under the NCAA "B" Cut or provisional qualifying times in their respective although only two set new season-best times.

John Walgast posted a 200-yard individual medley time of 1:49.88, which converts to 1:48.68 at sea level, a slight improvement over his earlier season-best of 1:48.91 from last week's RMAC Championships.  He did move from 29th to as high as 25th on the national top times list pending other last chance and conference championship meet results from around the country but will likely fall short of a NCAA Championship invitation.  Walgast also moved up two spots to seventh on the Mavericks' all-time performers list for the discipline.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Posadas also set an improved NCAA "B" cut time of 2:00.35 (converted) in the 200 breaststroke.  He moved up a spot to fifth in program history and moved up two spots on the national list to 26th, again pending other results from around the country.

Aiden Strath opened up the meet with a career-best time of 9:56.05 (9:44.65-converted) in the 1,000 free while Rhea Mead set a career-best 200 free time of 1:55.48 (1:54.28-converted).

The Mavs also had three swimmers go under the "B" standard in the women's 500 free, although all were off their season-bests.  Olivia Hansson, already assured of a national meet spot, paced her teammates in 5:06.54 (5:01.54-converted) while Gabriella Stanton (5:07.77, 5:02.77-converted) and Haven Hinkle (5:08.32, 5:03.32-converted) were just behind.

Kyla Babson also set a new career-best of 2:10.11 (converted) in the women's 200 fly while Sofia Shuler was just off her season-best in the 200 backstroke with a converted time of 2:03.64.

Emma Kimbrough also had a new career-best effort of 2:21.27 (converted) in the women's 200 breaststroke while Lucas Motley also had a career-best time of 2:03.65 (converted) to finish behind Posadas in the men's event.

The official NCAA Division II National Championship selections will be announced on Wednesday afternoon via NCAA.com.
