Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa men's tennis program climbed back to .500 on the season with a comfortable 4-0 win over Ottawa University of Arizona from Valley Vista High School in Surprise, Arizona.
The Mavericks ran the table against the Spirit, an NAIA opponent, winning all three doubles courts and dominating the singles matches that were played as
William Leschig,
Henry Scheck and
Emil Hultman all went 2-0 over the course of the dual. The Mavs are now 5-5 on the season and finished their weekend trip to Arizona with a 2-1 record.
Colorado Mesa won the doubles point as CMU's No. 1 tandem of Leschig and
Jorge Abreu and the No. 3 duo of
Diogo Manzano and Scheck both won 6-1 on their respective courts. On court two,
Philemon Jabin and Hultman prevailed in a tiebreak, defeating the Spirit's No. 2 team of Shane Ott and Carlos Robles 7-6 (4) to sweep the doubles portion for CMU.
Hultman was the first to finish in singles, defeating Ott on court four 6-1, 6-0. Scheck played on court three against OUAZ's Saul Bautista, winning 6-4, 6-1, while Leschig took care of Noah Koeroessy on court No. 2 by a 6-1, 6-2 score. The three singles wins gave CMU a 4-0 lead and the clinch, which ended the dual.
Philemon Jabin's singles match against Robles on court one went unfinished, but Jabin was in control, leading 7-5, 5-1. The Mavericks were scheduled to roll out
Axel Scholl on court five and
Shawn Springer on court six, but the Mavs clinched the dual before either of those matches started play.
The Maverick men have nearly two weeks until their next dual, but it will be an important one as CMU will face a PacWest conference opponent for the first time. CMU will travel to California to face Biola on Friday, March 1 before facing No. 24-ranked Azusa Pacific the following day. That will be followed by a doubleheader of home duals against No. 21 Hawai'i Hilo in Grand Junction on Sunday, March 10.
