GUNNISON, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team extended their winning streak to three against their mountain rivals as they defeated the Western Colorado Mountaineers 26-21 on Tuesday (Feb. 13) evening at Paul Wright Gym in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference finale for both squads.
 
Colorado Mesa freshman Dayson Torgerson started the dual off hot as he earned a pin of Roberto Estrada at the 4:07 mark of the match to give the Mavericks the early 6-0 lead. They extended that lead in the next weight as Oran Huff accepted a forfeit win for a 12-0 lead.
 
Denim Torgerson made it three-for-three as he picked up an impressive 15-0 technical fall win at the 6:45 mark of the match which extended the Maverick lead to 17-0.
 
Western Colorado had enough of Colorado Mesa and ended up winning the next five consecutive matches. The five-match run included two decisions, a major decision, a technical fall, and a pin which gave the Mountaineers a 21-17 lead heading into the 197-pound bout.
 
Junior Gabe Carranza put a halt to the streak in the 197-pound bout as he defeated Sage Harrison 5-0 before Tyler Doyle clinched the dual with a 21 second pin of Zach Schrader.
 
Not that they counted but, Colorado Mesa put a rubber stamp on the evening as they went three-for-three in the extra matches following the dual.
 
The Mavericks will send a select group of wrestlers to the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open on Sunday at Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
