AMARILLO, Texas – Senior
Cole Beyer helped the Mavericks to a record-breaking day on Tuesday (Oct. 8) afternoon at the Ryan Palmer Invitational at Amarillo Country Club as he picked up his second individual win of the season.
The Woodburn, Ore. native was phenomenal in the final round as he shot a 7-under, 63 to win the medalist honor by a stroke over round one leader Kongpop Kaikaew of St. Mary's. The 63 is the second-best score in program history and the second-best score in relation to par at 7-under. His 54-hole score of 197 is a program record by five strokes over Brandon Bingamen's 202 during the 2012-13 season at the Oredigger Invite.
After opening the round with a pair of pars, he bogeyed the par-4, No. 3 then Beyer took the course over. In his final 14 holes of the day, Beyer had eight birdies and six pars en route to his second win of the fall. He also won the Bishop Invitational last week at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash.
Leo Lavalle and
Timmy Cavarno each shot a 2-under, 68 in the final round. Lavalle gained four spots on the individual leaderboard to finish in a tie for ninth place at 5-under, 205 while Cavarno gained 25 spots and finished at 3-over, 213.
Luke Wagstaff finished in a tie for 13
th place on the leaderboard after shooting a 1-under, 69 on the day and 4-under, 206 for the tournament.
It wasn't just an individual record-breaking day but for the team as well. The Mavericks finished the tournament in second place behind nationally ranked Oklahoma Christian with a 54-hole program record of 821. The 831 is 10 strokes better than the score in the Centennial Cup at Walnut Creek last season.
The Mavericks shot 12-under, 268 in today's final round which is a program record for low round of a tournament. That mark is better than the 274 from last season's RMAC Tournament and the Southern Colorado Masters during the 2022-23 season. It is also a record for low round in a tournament in relation to par which breaks the 10-under set on two separate occasions.
Colorado Mesa finished ahead of host West Texas A&M by 14 strokes, Midwestern State by 16 strokes, and Colorado School of Mines by 19 strokes. This is the fourth straight top-3 team finish for the Mavericks this fall.
The Mavericks will play in their final two tournaments of the fall in two weeks when they head to the Hawaiian Islands for the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate and the Hawaii Pacific Sharks Shootout. Action begins on Monday October 21.
