WAIKALOA, Hawai'i— Cole Beyer and
Leo Lavalle both posted under par rounds while
Timmy Cavarno and
Luke Wagstaff both posted even par rounds of 70 as the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's golf team posted a team score of 276 (-4) to stand in a third place tie after the first round of the Southwest Airlines Hawai'i Pacific University Shark Shootout on Friday here at the Waikaloa Beach Resort.
Beyer turned in a 3-under par round of 67 and is tied for eighth place in the 105-man field while Lavalle carded a 69 to stand in an 18th place tie.
Cavarno and Wagstaff are tied for 28
th.

Baptiste Laborde is tied for 67
th after posting a round of 74, which was dropped from the Mavs' team score.
Cal State East Bay leads the 19-team field with a team score of 261 (-19) three shots ahead of defending national champion Colorado Christian, which posted a 264 (-16) on Monday.
The Mavs are tied with Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State.
Colorado Christian's Adam Duncan leads the individual standings after posting a round of 64 (-6), one shot ahead of a group of five golfers, including teammate Sangha Park. Cal State East Bay has three golfers in that tie at 65 (-5) and another in seventh place at 66 (-4).
Sonoma State's Colin Huang is also in the 5-way tie for second.
Beyer made three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 15
th hole during his round while Lavalle had two birdies and 15 pars in a steady round. Cavarno led the Mavericks with five birdies while Wagstaff and Laborde both posted three.
Saturday's second and final round will begin at 7 a.m. HST (11 a.m. Mountain) and will wrap up the Mavs' fall season.
