KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i— Cole Beyer and
Timmy Cavarno both posted even par rounds of 72 to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's golf team to a team score of 294 (+6) in the first round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, which was played Monday here at the Mauna Lani Golf Resort's North Course.
Beyer and Cavarno are tied for 20
th place in the individual standings while the Mavericks are tied for eighth place in the 19-team field, which includes 106 total golfers.
Beyer eagled the par-4 11
th hole, holing out on his second shot, while making three other birdies during his round. Cavarno also made an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole and made three other birdies as well.
Meanwhile, CMU's other three golfers in
Leo Lavalle,
Baptiste Laborde and
Luke Wagstaff all posted rounds of 75 (+3) in Monday's lap around the 6,913-yard, par 72 course. Laborde led the Mavs with four birdies.
National poll No. 1 and defending national champion Colorado Christian has the top four individuals in the field, including one who is playing as an individual, and leads the team standings by 11 shots after combining for a team score of 270, 18 shots under par.
Cal State East Bay, ranked ninth nationally, is in second at 281 (-7).
The Mavs are tied with the host Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans and is just four shots behind seventh place Cal State Dominguez Hills and is just six shots out of a tie for fifth place.
The Mavs will play alongside Western Washington, Cal State San Berardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills in Tuesday's second and final round, slated for a 7:30 a.m. HST (11:30 a.m. Mountain) shotgun start.
