PROVO, Utah— Ben Sampson and the women's 400-yard medley relay team both claimed victories to lead the Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams to second place positions after Day 1 of the BYU Tri-Meet, which continues on Saturday here at the Cougars' Richards Building Pool.
Sampson, the NCAA Division II record holder in the 200-yard backstroke, won that event in one minute, 49.35 seconds while
Agata Naskret,
Maddi Moran,
Kiara Borchardt,
Ada Qunell took the meet-opening relay in 3:49.13.
Those results helped the Maverick men to a score of 332 team points through 11 events. BYU, receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division I dual-meet poll, leads with 484 points while Air Force is 130 behind the Mavs and in third place with 202.
BYU's women lead with 406 points while the Mavs are two points ahead of Air Force, 310-308.
The Mavs also recorded four other second place finishes throughout the session as Sampson,
Max Ayres,
Dejan Urbanek and
Aziz Ghaffari placed second in the men's 400 medley relay while
Benedict Nagy and Sampson both took second in the 200-yard individual medleys. Naskret and
Katerina Matoskova also went 2-3 in the women's 200 backstroke.
Saturday's session will get underway at 11 a.m.
