FRESNO, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University's
Emil Hultman,
William Leschig and
Henry Scheck all won main draw opening round matches to lead the Maverick men's tennis team on the first day of the ITA West Regional Championships here on Thursday.
Hultman won his opening round singles match over Biola's Callen Hein, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) as the lone Maverick victor from the group of six that played on Thursday. However, he was knocked out by top-seeded Alexander Leischner of Point Loma Nazarene in the second round.
Meanwhile, Leschig and Scheck defeated Constantin Barth and Cole Rassner of Azusa Pacific by an 8-4 score in the first round of doubles play before falling to Hawai'i Hilo's Ryo Minakata and Cian McDonnell by an 8-3 scoreline in the round of 16.
After going a combined 1-5 in the opening round of singles play, the Mavericks really shined in the evening consolation matches as they went a combined 4-0 as
Philemon Jabin,
Jorge Abreu,
Diogo Manzano and Leschig all won straight set matches. Scheck also received a bye into the consolation bracket's round of 16, which will be played on Friday.
