ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Dayne Ortega,
Julio Antondo-Avalos,
Teo Casados and
Kelsey Montague broke Colorado Mesa University's 358-day old men's 4x400-meter relay school record on Saturday afternoon here at the Albuquerque Convention Center capping the Mavs' day during the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. The quartet ran to a time of three minutes, 17.40 seconds to break the former record of 3:19.29 by nearly two full seconds. Ortega and Montague had run the first two legs on the previous record-setting team on the same track, a 200-meter banked course, on Feb. 11, 2022.
In earlier action,
Alyssa Britton set a personal-record time of 2:23.14 in the 800 meters, moving into the No. 9 spot of program history.
Meanwhile, Mitch Lockhard led a group of three Maverick men in the mile, finishing in 4:35.86.
The Mavericks were also involved in the qualifying rounds of the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.
Avry Kennison led the CMU women win in the dash, posting a time of 7.96 while
Averie Griffith finished the hurdles in 9.21 seconds.
Joey Zook had the fastest of five men in the 60-meter dash (7.02) while
Nate Hanson posted a time of 8.71 seconds in the hurdles.
The Mavericks had a larger contingent at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi in Golden over the weekend.
CMU will be in action again next weekend competing in the Minnesota State Massive Meets next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) in Mankato.
