GOLDEN, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt senior
Kiana Jackson set an NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying triple jump mark of 11.79 meters (38 feet, 8 ¼ inches) and was of five second place finishers during a solid day of Maverick indoor track and field action on Saturday at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi.
The efforts came after the Mavs set two RMAC-leading and NCAA provisional qualifying marks during Friday's portion of the meet here at the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Jackson's mark, is the third best in the RMAC and 19
th best in the country this season, pending other late weekend results.
The Maverick women had three of the five second place finishes on the day as
Ricky Maestas took second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:17.75 to move into the No. 7 position on the Mavs' all-time top performers list.
Jordan Brockman also took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.21 after running to a career-best time of 9.10 during Friday's pentathlon.
Other women's highlights included a third place finish from freshman
Ally Herring in the 5K, her first collegiate attempt. She finished in 20:11.03 while
Jessie Beck finished fifth in 20:55.29.
Freshman
Kaelea Gibson also placed fifth in the high jump with a season-best clearance of 1.59 meters (5-2.25).
In the throws, freshman
Augustine Hancock and sophomore
Heather Yackey both set new personal records in the weight throw. Hancock finished seventh at 14.97 meters (49-1.5) to move up three spots to fourth in CMU history. Yackey improved her No. 8 positioning with a throw of 14.06 meters (46-1.5).
The Maverick men also had a pair of second place finishers in jumpers
Zace Buckhold and
Spencer Purnell. Buckhold matched his season-best and PR by clearing 2.00 meters (6-6.75) while Purnell, already a NCAA provisional qualifier, turned in an effort of 14.49 meters (47-6.5) in the triple jump.
Elsewhere,
Logan Hafey completed the men's heptathlon in sixth place and season-best score of 4,279 points. He finished third in both the 60-meter hurdles and 1,000 meters on Saturday, running to a time of 2:58.93 in latter while moving into ninth place on the Mavs' all-time top performers chart for that discipline. He also set a career-best time of 8.79 in the hurdles.
Kevin DeGree finished seventh in the 5K with a time of 16:11.68 while
Hayden Riley led the Mavs in the weight throw with a ninth place effort of 15.42 meters (50-7.25).
The Mavericks also had runners competing on Saturday at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque.
They will then head to Mankato, Minnesota for the Minnesota State Massive Meets next Friday and Saturday.
