GUNNISON, Colo.— Freshman sprinter
Gaby Horton put herself on to the Colorado Mesa University 60-meter top-10 list while a portion of the Maverick women's indoor track and field team combined for three event wins on Friday night at the Western Colorado Alumni Open here in the Mountaineer Field House.
The Maverick men also claimed four second place finishes as both squads combined for numerous season and career-bests.
The meet was the last regular season meet of the season for the Mavs, who rested many of their top athletes while giving the depth of the roster one more chance at qualifying for next week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. The top 18 declared student-athletes in each individual event will qualify for that meet at Adams State University in Alamosa.
Horton, a Palisade High School product, turned in one of the earliest highlights of the meet, delayed by nearly two hours after the Mavs got stuck on the road due to an accident. She posted a time of 7.75 seconds in the 60 meter preliminaries to win her heat and likely earn a spot in the RMAC Championships. She now ranks tied for seventh in CMU history with the time. She later finished fifth in the finals with a time of 7.84, which was also well under her previous season best of 7.98.
Meanwhile,
Emma Dikken,
Lily Nieslanik and
Kaelea Gibson won events while
Augustine Hancock and
Daisy Rinehart both set new PR's to raise their positioning on the Mavs' all-time charts.
Dikken led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 meters with a time of 59.63 seconds while
Elaina Arcand (59.91) was right behind in second.
Nieslanik won the long jump on a tie-breaker after she and teammate
Kierra Arceneaux both turned in marks of 5.17 meters (16 feet, 11 ½ inches)
Gibson cleared 1.55 meters (5-1) to win the high jump while Rinehart set an indoor PR of 3.31 meters (10-10.25) to place third in the pole vault. Hancock also had a PR of 15.13 (49-7.75) to finish second in the weight throw. Rinehart continues to sit third in CMU history while Hancock is still ranked fourth.
Elsewhere,
Alyssa Britton took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.84 while
Rachel Meeks finished third in the 3,000 meters with a mark of 11:27.33. Horton also took third in the 200 (26.10). while
Addy Kirkpatrick took third in the triple jump with a mark of 10.39 meters (34-1.25).
In the women's shot put,
Virginia Tomon finished second with a throw of 12.93 meters (42-5.25), just off her own school-record of 13.03, while
Heather Yackey finished third at 11.35 meters (37-3).
The Maverick men's second place finishes came from
Beau Thornton,
Kash Bradley,
Trey Briggs and
Hayden Riley. Thornton set a season-best time of 6.90 seconds to likely earn a spot in the RMAC Championships.
Bradley was second in the long jump with a mark of 6.50 meters (21-4) while
Trey Briggs set a season-best of 1.95 meters (6-4.75) in the high jump to move off the RMAC Championship selection bubble.
Riley had a shot put effort of 16.13 meters (52-11).
Elsewhere,
AJ Iarusso likely secured a RMAC Championship spot in the 60-meter hurdles, running to a time of 8.72 seconds, good for fifth place.
Zach Musso finished third in the 200 (22.84) while
Becker Ell also finished third, clearing 4.36 meters (14-3.75) in the pole vault.
Jameson Moore also had a slight PR effort of 16.04 meters (52-7.5) to take fifth in the weight throw.
In the distance events,
Casey Amori finished eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.27.
Kevin DeGree also finished eighth in the mile (4:40.06) while
Triston Charles ran to a solid time of 8:57.56 in the 3,000.
