GUNNISON, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore
Augustine Hancock smashed the Mavs' women's weight throw record while
Elijah Williams matched his own 60-meter mark as they set two of the Mavs' four NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks at Saturday's Mountaineer Open, hosted by Western Colorado University in the Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
Newcomer
Christina Palmer also set a new Maverick record in the shot put as the partial squad of Maverick sprinters, throwers and distance runners also combined for five event wins throughout the day.
Meanwhile, the Maverick jumpers and multi-eventers set 15 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks over two days at a meet in Colorado Springs, nine of which came on Saturday alone.
Hancock, a sophomore, recorded a toss of 17.63 meters (57 feet, 10 ¼ inches), breaking the former Maverick record by more than four meet while improving upon her 2022-23 season-best by more than eight feet. She placed second while Palmer placed fourth with a throw of 14.90 meters (48-10.5) to move into fifth on the Mavs' all-time performers chart.
Palmer, a transfer from Division I Queens (N.C.), won the shot put with a record of 13.25 meters (43-5.75) to break teammate
Virginia Tomon's record of 13.03 meters (42-9), set in January. Hancock also took third in the shot put with a throw of 11.38 meters (37-4), the best indoor mark of her career.
Meanwhile, Williams won the 60 meters in 6.72 seconds to match his Maverick record while winning the event.
Teo Casados also set an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.75 seconds to move into second place on the Mavs' all-time charts.
Kade Christensen (6.89),
Beau Thornton (6.92) and
Marik Cummings (6.99) all broke seven seconds as well as the Mavs had six of the top eight finishers.
Christensen also led a 1-7 Maverick sweep in the 200 meters, with a time of 22.44 seconds.
Jeremiah Reed took second in 22.48 while Thornton was third in 22.61.
The Mavs took the top four spots in the 800 as redshirt freshman
Jayden Thulson won in his Maverick track debut with a time of 2:00.03.
Kyle Towne (2:00.50),
Casey Amori (2:00.71) and
Dylan Campbell (2:02.46) were right behind.
The Mavs also won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:24.41 as
Justin Blanton,
Kelsey Montague, Williams and Casados cracked the Mavs' all-time top 10.
Elsewhere,
Nathan Jones placed third in the men's weight throw with a heave of 15.96 meters (52-4.5) to take over the No. 9 spot in CMU lore while
Cameron Kalaf took over the tenth position with a fourth place throw of 15.77 meters (51-9).
Jones also took over the seventh spot in CMU history for the shot put with a fifth place throw of 13.67 meters (44-10.25).
On the women's side,
Gaby Horton set a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 24.97 seconds in the 200 meters to finish second and take over the No. 5 spot in program history. She also took third in the 60 meters with a time of 7.74 seconds, 0.01 under her former personal best that puts her eighth in CMU history.
Jordan Burnett also took fifth in the 60 at 7.88 seconds after running a faster preliminary round time of 7.79 to move into the No. 10 spot in CMU history. The defending RMAC Champion and 2023 RMAC Freshman of the Year also took third in the 400 with a solid time of 57.82 seconds.
Brooke Miller also took third in the 800 with a career-best time of 2:22.75 to retain the last spot in the Mavs' all-time top 10.
