Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Maverick duo of Tyler Landen and William Leschig nearly made a run to the semifinals of the main doubles draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Regionals from Grand Junction, coming up just short in a heartbreaking tiebreaker loss in the quarterfinals.
Landen and Leschig played to a deadlock of seven games all against the Point Loma team of Lukas Schuster and David Straussburger, but the PLNU squad pulled through to win the tiebreaker and the match, 8-7 (7-3).
Earlier in the day, Landen, who was the last remaining Maverick in the main singles draw, lost in the round of 16 to Concordia Irvine's Alexander Edmonston 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
The consolation portions of the men's bracket were either canceled or heavily modified because of torrential rain and lightning in the area. Two Mavericks doubles teams scheduled to play in the consolation bracket did not take the court.
In the singles consolation bracket, freshman Henry Scheck advanced with a dominant 8-1 win over Adrian Daoust of Concordia Irvine. Two other all-CMU matchups between Emil Hultman and Jandre Van Wyk and William Leschig and Jamison Pfingston were not played. Preference was given to main draw matches and matches with teams that traveled from out of state.
The three-day ITA Regionals conclude on Saturday with the semifinals and finals of the men's and women's singles draws and the finals of the men's and women's doubles.
