GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— A NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 45.85 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay on the track and some stellar jumping marks in the field were the highlights of the day for the Colorado Mesa University track and field squad, which hosted the Maverick Top Gun Last Chance meet on Sunday.
The relay quartet of
Kierra Arceneaux,
Serenity Burnett-Perry,
Shaya Chenoweth and
Sierra Arceneaux clocked the time, the third fastest in program history, in the opening race of the meet and put themselves in the national championship qualification picture. Despite the altitude adjustment penalty that will raise the converted time to 45.97, the Mavericks will be ranked as high as 13
th on the national performance list.
Meanwhile,
Justin Thompson broke his own wind-legal school-record with a mark of 7.49 meters (24 feet, 7 inches) in the men's long jump. He will move up to a tie for 12
th on the national list.
Later,
Kiana Jackson set a wind-aided NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 12.48 meters (40-11.5 inches) in the triple jump, to move into a tie for the ninth on the current national performance list, likely securing a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championships later this month in Allendale, Michigan. Her mark is the best all-conditions effort in CMU history but will not break her own school-record of 12.37 meters (40-7) as it was turned in with a 3.8-meter-per-second wind behind her back.
Men's triple jumper
Spencer Purnell also turned in a provisional qualifying leap of 14.91 meters (48-11) to move as high as 22
nd nationally while national performance list co-leader
Josie Coffey cleared 1.75 meters (5-8.75) in the women's high jump on a short run-up.
The Mavericks also had several other strong performances on the track.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of
Sterling Brassfield,
Kade Christensen,
Jeremiah Wilson and
Elijah Williams ran to a time of 41.34 seconds, fourth fastest in school history.
Kendall White won the women's 1,500 meters in 5:04.69, taking over the No. 10 spot in CMU history for that event.
Carl Heide then ran to a time of 54.38 seconds to win the 400-meter hurdles and move up four spots to second in program history.
Trevor Smith also took over the No. 2 spot in CMU history with a 3,000-meter steeplechase mark of 9:41.90.
Victoria Eversley (12.37) and
Sterling Brassfield (10.76) also had strong wind-aided times in the 100 meters while
Jeremiah Reed (21.87) and
Dayne Ortega (21.92) went 1-2 in the men's 200. Ortega's time moved him to sixth in program history.
Elsewhere in the field,
Taeryn Trumper won the long jump with a mark of 5.83 meters (19-1.5), just a centimeter off her No. 2 CMU ranking best of 5.84 from last week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
Kierra Arceneaux also moved up a spot to fifth in program history with a leap of 5.67 meters (18-7.25) to place second.
In the throws,
Cameron Kalaf won the javelin throw with a heave of 55.27 meters (181-4) to move all the way to second on the Mavericks' all-time performers' list.
Meleeah Holmes-McKown also moved up two spots to second on the Maverick list in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.00 meters (154-2).
The Mavericks are slated to send a contingent of athletes to the Azusa Pacific University Last Chance Meet next Friday and Saturday.
