Torres crushes 1,500-meter record with national-leading, auto-qualifying time

Maverick throwers, jumpers sweep Saturday wins as Purnell, Rigsby set NCAA provo marks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Just two weeks after destroying the school-record in the indoor mile en-route to a national runner-up finish, Colorado Mesa University's Tony Torres did the same in the outdoor 1,500 meters as he blazed to an NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship  automatic qualifying and national-leading time of three minutes, 46.28 seconds as one of seven Maverick men's winners on Saturday at the Maverick Open, the debut home meet on CMU's new on-campus track & field facility.

Torres' time, which converts to 3:41.84 with the altitude-adjustment, smashed the nearly 6-year old and sea-level registered Maverick standard of 3:49.33, which had been held by John Cusick, who ran unattached in the weekend meet, since 2015.  Torres will lead the national performance list by more than four seconds.

Maverick redshirt sophomore Spencer Purnell also broke the school-record in the triple jump as both he and Gunner Rigsby set NCAA provisional qualifying marks as did Justin Thompson in the high jump.  Thompson also won the long jump.

The Mavericks also swept the Saturday throwing events as Brock Murphy won the weight throw on the final throw of the competition to begin the day before Hayden Riley took the shot put later in the afternoon.

The Mavericks also went 1-2 in the 110-meter hurdles as Nate Hanson and Zayden Davis moved into the No. 3 and 4 positions in the program's history for that discipline.

Freshman Kelsey Montague also claimed victory in his outdoor debut, winning the 400 meters as the Mavericks scored 144 team points to take second in the 3-team meet, which also included numerous unattached athletes.    Western Colorado University won the team crown with 151 points while Westminster College was third with 45.

The Maverick women also set three new school-records and three NCAA Championship provisional qualifying efforts while finishing second.

In the men's triple jump, Purnell recorded a then school-record mark of 15.00 meters (49 feet, 2 ½ inches) to take the early lead before Oseoba Airewele of Holistic Athletics jumped 15.22 meters (49-11.25) in the third round to take the lead.  Purnell then registered an even better school-record mark of 15.04 meters (49-4.25) on his final attempt.

Rigsby, making his Maverick debut, had recorded a fifth-round mark of 14.84 meters (48-8.25) that also exceed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 14.69 meters and the former Maverick record of 14.46 meters (47-5.25), that had been set by Matarai Rowe at the 2015 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.

Purnell and Rigsby  now ranks as high as fourth and seventh nationally.

Thompson, the RMAC indoor champion and NCAA Division II All-American dominated the high jump clearing 2.11 meters (6-11) in his first collegiate outdoor meet.  That NCAA provisional qualifying height that will rank him as high as tied for sixth nationally.  That mark, which matches his indoor personal record, puts him second in Maverick outdoor history behind only 2019 national champion Ethan Harris.

Thompson also moved into the No. 2 spot in CMU long jump history as he won that event with a leap of 7.12 meters (23-4.5) on his final attempt.  Purnell finished fourth at 6.58 meters (21-7.25) to take over the No. 10 spot in CMU's outdoor history.

After watching Riley take a come-from-behind win in the discus throw on Friday, Murphy delivered a late win in the hammer throw, the first event on Saturday.  In his final attempt and the final throw of the entire event, he recorded a toss of 51.05 meters (167-6) to take the win while moving into fifth in program history.  Western's Rhys Ryba had held the lead since the third round at 50.88 meters (166-11).

Riley finished third at 46.71 meters (153-3) to take the No. 9 spot in program history.

However, Riley came back to win the shot put as he edged Ryba with a fifth-round best of 15.83 meters (51-11.25) to take over the No. 2 spot in program history.  Ryba had a best of 15.60 meters, also in the fifth round.  Murphy finished third at 13.34 meters (43-9.25) and now ranks ninth in Maverick lore.

In the sprints, the Maverick men's 4x100-meter relay team of Jeremiah Wilson, Beau Thornton, Eliot Ward and Hanson took second in 42.47 seconds before Hanson clocked a time of 15.07 seconds to win the 110-meter hurdles.  He now ranks third in program history while Davis, who finished second in 15.20 seconds, now ranks fourth.  Davis also placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:02.30.

Montague then won the 400 meters in 49.77 seconds, becoming the fifth fastest Maverick in that outdoor event.

In the 100 meters, Thornton took second behind unattached athlete Clint Cole (10.74) with a time of 10.95 seconds.  He now ranks sixth in Maverick history.  Wilson finished third in 11.00 seconds and now stands seventh.

He also placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.42 seconds to move into a tie for ninth in CMU history for that discipline.

In the 800 meters, Triston Charles finished fifth in 1:57.81 to move into the No. 10 position in CMU history.  He had finished second in the 5,000 meters on Friday.

The Mavericks also took second in the 4x400-meter relay as Montague, Casey Sharpe, Jeremiah Otto and John Eckdahl combined for a time of 3:24.51.
